Merry XMAS everyone, hope all is good !

Big old family safe was near full and too many folks know where it is and some of what is in it. Combination is engrained in my noggin.

Cut hole in basement floor and concreted in high end floor safe for the important, irreplaceable stuff. Big dusty chore,1" of conc over a layer of red paving brick.

Also got gun safe for the lesser firearms.

Now I have 2 new combos to remember and 3 to pass on.

Where is the illusive place to securely store, hide them???

On a side note it is going to be a green Christmas here in Niagara, you ?

Best Wishes, Mark.

If you have a cell phone, you could place the combinations , as a phone number, in the address book.

Or you could e-mail them to you and save them in your e-mail.

They're saying low 50's for tomorrow here in eastern Missouri, La Nina or something. Just figured it was Al Gore's internet causing global warming or something...

I always wanted one of them fancy gun rooms off the basement, you know, where the wall slides back and you walk in to this immense... oh wait, no, that's the Bat Cave... well, something like that.

It's only secure if you're the only one that knows it's exists. Sounds like you have a good plan as long as they have to really hunt to find them. I was thinking about mounting a few smaller gun safes in the basement, but up between the rafters, then making some sort of paneling that you would have to slide out of the way to even see them.

My trick on the combinations is I keep them on my computer and a little book in my small safe that holds my important papers, but they aren't the real combinations, they are one number off on the actual ones.

Sounds like one hell of a " Man Cave" too me. Supposed to be almost 50 here tomorrow. You and yours have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year! Dale

I don't understand the problem. Its getting pretty common as I get older.

Do you want or need to pass along the numbers to the family so if you're hit by a truck, they can recover the contents? Or are you afraid you'll forget the numbers? Different problems. I remember a story about a safe guy (safe smith) who was hired to open a safe. He was the 3rd or 4th person hired to open the safe, and all had failed before him. He tried all his tricks and magic, and to no avail. Then sitting on the floor next to the safe he looked up in the rafters and saw some numbers in magic marker on one of the floor joists. He tried them and the safe opened right up.

Of course the customers were overjoyed that he had succeeded where the others had all failed. He was gracious and simply implied it was his advanced skill that made it all possible.

Multiple safes shouldn't be a huge problem, just get a change key (its a device made by the safe maker) and change them all to the same combination. Then you've only got one to remember. :)

None of us can help you with the issue of others knowing you've got a safe or more. As long as you live where you do, that will never be resolved to your satisfaction.

You can also rent a bank safety deposit box (they're call different things in different places). Some will have no problem with firearms storage, as long as the gun isn't visible when you bring it into the bank building. Store the handguns in a box from Staples or Office Despot. Its extremely rare for there to be a loss from one. You can also store you will and the combinations in a clearly marked envelope in the box. Just make sure no one but you has access. Its OK to tell a few trusted others what's in the box. It does them no good without access.

Write the Combinations down on a piece of paper and store it in one of the safes, it's gotta be secure there.

if you have an attorney he/she should be able to provide secure storage, or rent a safety deposit box at a local bank.
