So Sunday was our day for the State Fair of Texas. We go every year and sometimes compete in the creative arts contests...that's another story. Anyway, we get there and stand in line to get "wanded" at the security checkpoint and of course I carry anywhere I go. It's my turn to be checked so I show the guard my CHL. He says fine and continues to wand me. nothing happens and he says "where is it located so I can check elsewhere?" I said "if you can't find it with that, we're done." The wand never showed anything, he said "just go on in" and continued checking the folks behind me.

Now, I may not be the brightest bulb on the string but I think if it were my job as security guard and this happened, maybe I would stop the line and request a different instrument...what do you think?
 
If you are being wanded, for concealed weapons, and he'd found it, would your permit still allow you to go in? Texas has that 30-06 thing, right? If the 30-06 sign isn't posted, you can carry?

This was a security guard, right, not a cop? Why would you show him your permit? I know y'all are required to tell cops that you are carrying, but rent-a-cops?

And, yeah, to answer your question, if my metal detector did not detect the gun the man says he is carrying, I'd ask for another detector. The one time I got wanded - going on an airplane - he would put it to his watch before each pass. It beeped on the metal in his watch, so it should beep on a knife or gun.
 
Yes, you're allowed to carry, no 30.06 signage. You show your permit to keep from emptying your pockets and pulling out a gun in front of the other fairgoers. Typically, we show to the guard and then we're directed to a LEO who is close by. He/she will make you raise your arms and bend side to side to make sure it's not visible. Always been that way accept for this year.

30.06 signage is a no carry sign that I believe is acquired through coordination with the state. The form/factor, text and fonts have to meet certain criteria and must be placed in the proper locations/positions for it to be binding.

It is the section number in the penal code that defines the exact wording and sizes that the sign must comply with to be a legally enforceable notice that licensed carry is not permitted on the premises.

Doesn't he get paid either way? :D
 
You musta' been carrying one of them plastic ghost-guns.
Everybody knows metal detectors don't pick up them things. :rolleyes: :D
 
I would.....

I would at least consider the effectiveness of the job I was performing. But hey. The man is getting paid to wand visitors, so why should he pull the rug out from under himself? They pay me to wand, I wand.:D

PS: My son used to go to a hang out that wanded everybody. I appreciated the security and keeping kids with knives and guns out, but if it was closing time and I wanted to go claim my son, I had to empty my pockets and get wanded. I'm a grey haired old coot and they have some punky kids doing the checking that like to look and sound bad. I think it's humiliating as hell. I'm glad my son doesn't go there any more.

First rule of CCW, is you don't talk about CCW.
I wouldn't have shown him anything.
If he found your carry he would have told you to secure it, if he didn't, then game on.

By showing him your card, you basically admitted to having a firearm on you.
Lucky you didn't get more of an "enhanced" search by a friendly DPS officer.
 
When I worked in Kuwait and couldn't have my guns I got heavily into knives, I carried four or five in various places on my body. I went through security and vaguely heard a beep. The Kuwaiti soldiers on security didn't react and I thought nothing of it. I went through security again at the gate and the same thing happened. I shrugged and sat down to wait for the boarding call. That is when I felt the very nice folding combat knife in my back pocket.

I flew to my layover in Dubai like that worried the whole way. My plan was to give it to my girlfriend (now wife) who worked in Duty Free. But I saw I would have to pass through Dubai security and they actually looked alert. I had no choice but to go to the restroom and throw it away.

The funniest thing about this post is that you think it’s a joke.

I’ve worked Security Theater for almost 7 years and my experience has been that they really don’t give a duck fart about actual results as long as everything looks good.

The client is paying to have a guard stand there and go through the motions because the insurance rider says so. They're hoping that just seeing someone checking will deter people from even trying to get a weapon in.

What do you think would happen if he actually found a gun?
 
I coulda shoulda wrote your post word for word, smoke. Instead of "Likes" they should have a "Amen" option.
 
Like smoke, I have over 35 years as a guard and have been retired almost the last 15 since then. I suppose I have worked at just about every phase or job in the field unless they came out with something new or invented new gadgets since then. First for most security jobs as smoke said, the core main reason for a guard IS for the company, store or whatever to qualify for insurance or at least cheaper insurance. My main job was a little more than that as I worked for the largest defense company and the government dictated to as what type and how security was done. Of course my company also made some aircraft for other countrys too and they had to also satisfy them too.
Lets say I was on a post checking workers leaving. They had to open their lunch box`s, brief cases, and EVEN PURSE`s and HANDBAGS for me to go through. I hated doing that. They knew it was a condition of employment when they hired in. Now knowing that, and expecting it, you dont think that anyone would try to steal or take out contraband do you?
Used to be some old worn out jokes I heard 50 years ago and new hires will hear them today. Dis guy go`s through da gate every day pushing a wheelbarrow. Da dumb guard always go`s through the stuff and finds nutthing hot. Then way later they figure out da guy was stealing wheelbarrows! Or the one where this guy fell down in front of da guard, pass`s out and dey find out he was stealing hose that he had wrapped around himself under his shirt!
It seems stupid to have to show a guard that you know well your badge or ID every time you go through the gate. Yet that guard knows that on a regular basis there is often a plain cloths goverment security rep that HE doesnt know watching HIM to see that he enforces the rule. That worker might be your brother, but you better have him show you his ID or it will eventualy bite you if you get lax. Another thing, if you fall asleep, open your eyes and see the captain looking at you, you better say amen!
 
Some pompous woman from the Fair was on Dallas TV a couple of years ago and bragged that they now ban even ordinary pocket knives. I decided then and there to avoid the Fair.

Were they checking for knives? They said on TV that even licensed guns were forbidden.

What about the Dallas zoo? I've thought of calling to ask but would probably just get some anti-weapon person or ninny who'd tell me they're banned, even if not so. Do they wand people there or have other metal detectors in use?

This news broadcast must have been just propaganda. I always produce my CHL and DL, again, to keep from emptying my pockets of a pistol and mag and to get directed to the LEO. I won Best Of Show for my ice cream in the 2011 Ice Cream Crank contest. There I was, packin, crankin ice cream in the Creative Arts building :D.
