As I was picking up my 642 from my FFL I noticed a 1917 .45acp in the case for $399. It looked to have a bobbed hammer, and supposedly had some custom work. What should I look for, and is this a decent price?

Can you describe any other details? Is the barrel still the original 5.5", was it modified to be DAO, refinished? A photo would be helpful also if you can post one.

Of course, any modifications will diminish its collector value. Depending on exactly what's been done to it, some folks may value it highly as a carry gun.

My general rule of thumb is that any S&W N-Frame in good mechanical condition with anywhere near reasonable cosmetics is worth $400.

When you get into modified guns however, you want to be sure you really like it the way it is. Restoring to anywhere near its original configuration may be very pricey. Finding someone else who wants it may be a real challenge.

The barrel looked to be 4" or less, I didn't ask to look at it closer becuase I have a tendency to make impulse buys.
Yeah, it's hard to say what to do especially not knowing your exact situation, tastes, etc.

The gun stores I shop at guarantee that anything they sell will at least function as intended. With that understanding, and assuming that it doesn't look like it's been routinely bounced down a gravel road, I would be very tempted to buy it. Others here would say "That's crazy. Put your money into something better." So your money, your choice...
