What Has Happened to the Smith and Wesson Forum?

Some participants in forums are much like the discourteous drivers and road ragers we must deal with today: rude, arrogant, impatient, immature, and more important than the rest of us. Regrettably, many of them seem to be proud of their behavior and they're shielded by the Internet from a much deserved rebuke. That gives them a needed, but false sense of bravado.

As a result, many level-headed participants choose not to respond to certain threads. They see it as a waste of time and effort. Is my assessment wrong?

Here's a few thread that cost me some sleep...

If you actually take the time and read the replies, you'll see that some of the comments are rude and out of left field. How would you handle them?

A number of the comments put members on our radar. Be reasonable, civil and rational. We're here to discuss all things S&W, share knowledge and provide a platform for like minded enthusiasts. If you can't live with our rules and terms, go elsewhere.

Now I need to get back to screening new members and weeding out scammers and scammer. Oh yeah... I also start around 4am, so I need my beauty sleep!

I'm seeing an unusual (for here) level of contentiousness on a couple of gun control threads, primarily from recent new users who can't be content to have their say and move on.

I suspect AI users and/or paid shills, frankly. The Internet will find a way to deal with them, just like spambots.

Lee’s Rule 3 is a gem.
Just to clarify...
This is rule #3:

3. Do NOT descend into personal attacks on a member.
Naiveté, or viewpoints different from yours are no reason to call a member an idiot or moron.
If a poster is obnoxious, report him and ignore him.
Do not feed trolls.
NO LYNCHINGS or MUGGINGS.
Learn to use the "IGNORE" feature for posters that ANNOY you.

You should close each of those threads. Nothing new under the sun is going to come out of them. There's a useful discussion to be had but it's being drowned out by seminar posters.

Well, that's what I think.

Personally I cringe everytime I see someone begin a sentence with LOLZ. I think generally the population is just lower effort in their communication because it takes effort to respond to someone clearly and courteously.
There are 14 posts since 2009, one of them yours, which contain that phrase. You ain't cringing that much . . .

I guess I missed all this. I learned the hard way not to break the rules, so I steer clear of anything that even looks like it might be verboten.

I'm glad that this forum doesn't allow politics, etc.

Sometimes it's a good thing to just chill and enjoy the Smudge memes.

I'm sorry, I participated in one of the threads mentioned above. I watched it for a long time and should have never waded in, but I did and felt bad about it for several days. Their posts will not change my mind and I'm sure my posts will not change theirs. I should have taken the high road and just sat it out.

Amen. But its not always obvious at first that the posters are leading into a soapbox session. I know I posted at least once in one of those threads thinking there was a rational discussion that could be returned to. :(

Every forum has them; the callous, the joyless, the dour, the off putting, the sanctimonious, the condescending, the perpetually angry and bitter vinegaroons who's mission it seems is to suck the life out of well meaning threads.

I've never heard vinegaroons before, I live in NY. I had to look it up. Now I kind of wish I hadn't. ugh!
