I carry a M&P Shield 9mm. I want to acquire a 22LR as a plinking/practice gun. I want to stay with S&W. I have found what I believe to be 3 22LR guns very similar to my 9mm. However, I am confused because there seems to be 3 variants of this gun. Can someone tell me which one of the S&M 22LR guns compares best (barrel length, action, weight, trigger pull, etc.) with my Shield 9mm?

I'll second the 22C. I have one and it's a really fun gun to take to the range. Mine eats everything. I try to take it to the range once an week and shoot 300 or so rounds. :) I really have stopped shooting my Model 63 since I bought the 22C. It really was a project cleaning the 63 after a range trip. The 22C is easy to break down and clean. And it takes me half the time to clean it.

I've got both a Shield 9mm and a 22 M&P Compact and enjoy both immensely. They both handle any brand of ammo and I've had no issues with either. Don't think you can go wrong.

I own both the shield and the 22c...they are similar. 22c is a bit longer, and the shield is quite a bit heavier. Field stripping is a bit different, but overall they are pretty similar.

Yes, and the controls are very similar, so the 22 compact is an excellent trainer for the Shield. I got one for my wife specifically as a trainer, as the Shield is one of the few pistols we have that she can rack.

I shoot a 9C and a Shield.

Recently bought a M&P22 C and I think it is an excellent training pistol for either the 9C or the Shield.

My 22C has been very dependable, easy to clean, and shoots most brands of ammo well. The 22C is also fun to shoot!
