My grandmother was born in 1892. She has been gone many years now. A few words she used often and I still remember.

Grip - suitcase - Pack you grip for the trip.
Wraps - Coat/sweater/etc. "Don't forget your wraps".
Picture show - Movie at a movie theater. "Going to the picture show".
Sweeper - Vacuum cleaner.

This is a good one. I have used it on occasion in recent times and gotten funny looks from young unlettered adults. I vaguely recall a story of someone being severely criticized for using a racist word i.e. niggardly.

I reckon it's use must be a geographical or cultural thing. It's use is quite common in my neck of the woods.

I reckon Faulkner is right. Certainly common to our part of the world as well.
