original post:

The bottom line is this:

FDOVER mailed a check as payment for $600 on 4/3/23. Just 3 days later, and before the check ever arrived in the mail, fdover STOPPED PAYMENT on his own check… and only then did he call or text me to inform me of this. The check would not arrive for another 2 days!

Here is a timeline of the events as they happened:

4/1/23
Buyer (fdover of Scottsdale, AZ) agreed to send $600 for payment for S&W model 30-1 .32 S&W long revolver
Buyer INSISTED that I accept his personal check as payment, although I had not agreed to take a personal check as payment in the original FS posting.
After a short exchange, I did agree to accept his check as payment, but told him that the gun WOULD NOT BE SHIPPED before the check was in-hand.
I also told fdover that I would be in the woods turkey hunting for several days, and that internet/cell service was going to be spotty for me, but that he need not worry, the gun would be on it's way once check was received, and I told him to check my feedback/references.

Standard check writing/accepting protocol is for the seller to ship item(s) once the check has been received, and in almost every case, once it has had time to clear the bank. Only a fool would send an item valued at $600 to a complete stranger before AT LEAST having the check in hand… and typically once check has cleared/been confirmed. This is just basic common sense and scam/fraud protection 101.

4/2/23:
I initiated the purchase of a prepaid UPS 2 day air shipping label from ShipMyGun.com (an internet FFL) to be delivered to Scottsdale Gun Club, Scottsdale, AZ Att: fdover. The typical handgun label takes 24-48 hours to be processed by ShipMyGun.com and arrive in the shipper's email inbox.

4/3/23:
The actual date postmarked on the envelope containing the check fdover sent as payment for the gun… It is safe to presume this is the date the check was mailed.

4/4/23:
A pre-paid UPS label was delivered to my inbox, at which point I printed a copy and affixed it to the box in which I carefully packed the revolver.
I then sent to fdover, in an email and as an attachment, a copy of that shipping label for future tracking purposes… I also at that time texted the same to his cell phone number exchanged through PM on the forum. He acknowledged this and told me the check was already in the mail. So far, so good.

4/6/23:
Received a text message from fdover (the first message received since Tuesday 4/4) in which he stated that he could not get in touch with me, or that I had failed to respond quickly enough to his panicked emails/PMs, and therefore he had stopped payment on the check he had mailed just 3 days prior (mailed on 4/3 from AZ to GA).
The envelope containing fdover's check for $600 would not arrive at my house until another 2 days later (check finally arrived on 4/8)

fdover didn't even allow sufficient time for the check to arrive in the first place, and certainly he didn't allow for it to be validated or cleared.

I find it preposterous that this man expected me to send this firearm across the country, and to a complete stranger without so much as securing payment beforehand…and especially so in this case, due to the speculative nature of a personal check to begin with.

I did agree (reluctantly) to accept, as payment, a personal check from fdover…I did so ONLY as a courtesy to him and as a GOOD FAITH GESTURE of my trust in him, the forum, and it's members… But, I did not agree to ship the gun any time prior to receiving said check (in-hand), period. Any claim made otherwise by fdover is patently false, and any intelligent person can see that it must be.

What I got in return was like a slap in the face, considering I nearly sent him a $600 firearm without first securing payment, and only on the basis of a verbal agreement/promise which I mistakenly counted as irrevocable.

Now, I am out for the $35+ dollars spent on a non-refundable prepaid ups label...and fdover thinks somehow that he has the high ground here... well I'll let you decide for yourself but SELLER BEWARE - fdover of Scottsdale AZ is not trustworthy.

Also note that the last PM message from fdover was sent to me on 3/30!! How hard could he have tried to get in touch with me really? No PMs, no calls or texts...nothing. BEWARE!
