Hi,I sent my 617-6 back to Smith yesterday,It was spitting lead terrible and I was sick of getting sprayed with fragments.I emailed Smith on friday morning after shooting it and had a return label that afternoon.I hope the repair service is as fast as the response.I also have a 617-1 and it works flawlessly.Jay Parisi

I hope they fix yours. I sent a 617 10 shot in for timing problem. They said they replaced firing group components, but it came back worse.🤨

No longer own one. Give me a 6 shot.

I hope they get your 617 adjusted to shoot well for you. I'm like bigggbbruce, I prefer the 6 shot model. Mine's a 617-1.

My 4 inch 10 shooter went back. It’s great now.

Just for the accuracy purposes, I had a 2X Leupold on my 617 for a while. I remember shooting a couple of 5 shot groups under 3 inches at 100 yards. It’s iron sighted now.

I think they’ll get you fixed up.

My 4 inch 617-6 went back to S&W for the same reason. Two of the ten charging holes/chambers were out of time. Smith & Wesson replaced the extractor due to two of the ratchets causing carry up problems. They also recut the forcing cone. Shoots like a dream now and goes with me to the range every time I go. This might be what the OP's is doing. I found this video helpful when I first had the trouble.

Seems like S&W is having problems with thier Forcing Cones.
My Model 69 i bought two years ago had to go back to have the forcing cone cut. Great now.
