The 4th edition Of the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson
on Page 491 lists reported triple alpha sightings of revolvers.
CCC is not specifically listed but CCD, CCE, CCF and CCH are
listed for 1997, CBP is the last listing for 1996 and the first
listing for 1998 is CCK.
Based on that information I would surmise your gun was made
in the summer of 1997.
I'm sure the folks who know stuff can pin it down better. That's
the best I can do with my very limited resources.

The revolver was purchased at an estate sale and came bare - no box. It was so gummed up with some kind of lube the cylinder would not rotate. Cleaned up it shows very little sign of being fired with Very minor wear. I've yet to fire this particular pistol.

In this era, the Special Order code was a packing date (usually, unless it was a real special order). So if a gun was made today under this system, the code would be 3233 (year ending in 3, 233rd day of the year).
Current guns have a standard packing date code, so today would read 082123 on the label.
For what it's worth, the dried up lube was probably varnished
up WD-40. I know lots of people who used it a lot.

I've also had a couple of handguns seize up because I cleaned them with Hoppe's No. 9 and let them sit for an extended period (I heard that the original formula was changed some time back). I could barely move the slide on my stainless S&W 1911, and the cylinders and ejection rods on my 627-5 and 642-2 were stuck. After I thoroughly cleaned them with a CLP, they were happy! I learned my lesson- Hoppe's No. 9 is an excellent bore solvent, but it is definitely not a lubricant and protectant!
