Does S&W have a database available online that you can enter the SN of your gun to find the build date?

I have an old Model 1917 with a 104xxx serial number I would like to trace.

No, but were you to move this/start another thread in the older hand ejector forum, you'd get the information you're after---sort of. Build dates of S&W's are usually hard to come by. Exact shipping dates (and recipients) are provided with a letter from the historical foundation. As an alternative, there are enough folks here with enough 1917's with known ship dates for you to make a good guess.

There's not an online database for all Smith & Wesson handguns. However during World War 1 the US government took over production of the model 1917. Their production data is available at oldguns.net. Your gun with a serial number beginning 104 XXX was made in September 1918. There's also a catalog of Smith & Wesson handguns called the standard catalog of S&W 4th edition. That will give you serial number ranges for guns made all the way back to when Smith & Wesson first begin making guns before the Civil War.
