Serial Number Question

My serial number starts with DTA. Just wondering if it puts it in the realm of the one of the first batches made? I bought it brand new.

I've taken about a year off of shooting and have only taken my 15-22 out about twice since buying it. Was using Rem Gold Box. Many FTF, FTE, no OOB's. Will start shooting again this weekend. Going to use ammo from the approved list and see how she does. Almost hoping for some problems so I'll have justification to send it in for upgrades.

Yes this is the first batch of rifles. S&W now states in the new owner manuals to NOT use ANY remington brand ammo, as well as a few others. There is a thread here on this site ( that I take it you have seen) about the approved brands that S&W tested that is listed in the new manuals. Subsonics are not approved either, but people still shoot them. Hopefully you dont have issues, but its almost worth it if you were to have problems, just for peace of mind on the matter.

Well I went to the range this weekend and out of 200 rounds I had 3 incidents where the bullet was stripped from the magazine and entered the gun at an upwards angle, causing the bolt to crush the side of the case. What would this be called as far as a malfunction. I would like to properly describe it to S&W.....is it considered an OOB??

An OOB (Out Of Battery) is when the round is fired before it's completely into the chamber. What you're seeing would be more of a mis-feed.

Does your magazine have 22LR - 25 ROUND stamped on the side or just 22LR ?

Which one is the one you want? Mine is the one that says "22LR - 25 ROUND".

Mine has just "22 LR" on the side. Do they have a recall on the mags too. I will still call and see if I can get the thing updated. Do they replace the older style mags free of charge as well??

S&W's policy is the 1st gen mags "still work" with the 15 22. Last I heard, is they give you a free mag if your rifle has to be sent in, but wont exchange the first generation mags for the new ones.

great...I had my wife buy me 3 extra for a Christmas gift soon after I bought the rifle. All have the "22 LR" stamp on the side.

On the positive side the thing is pretty damn accurate when it's working and that without any optics....just the iron sights.

Can't hurt to ask S&W if they'll swap them out for the new ones... but before you ask, make sure you're staggering the rounds correctly in the mag when loading 'em. If they don't stagger correctly, they don't feed correctly...

swap out to the j&p trigger springs.. it will help with the oob problems and some feed problems and it will allow you to run sub sonic ammo threw your suppressed m&p reliably
