Coming from the heavy equipment industry I've seen them start a new model with serial numbers starting with something other than 1. I've seen the first machines come out with a S/N of 100 or 1,000 and such. Not having researched Smith's for long, did they always start their serial number sequences with number 1? i.e. N0001, AEJ0001, etc.

From what I've seen and read the single letter prefix guns started at 1 as in K1 N1, etc. Those were supposed to end at 999,999 but in a few cases (ie the N frame transition from S to N prefix) the number didnt make it that high.
