Hi and excuse me if this had been asked over a million times.... I am trying to get a rough idea when a S&W revolver was produced, based on the serial number.

Is there a quick reference out, on the www, that will fill me in to the approximate year a model was made?

Thanks, TJ

The factory will give you the information if you call, and the Standard Catalog of S & W has a table to which most refer for this information. If you can post the letter(s) and number off the bottom of the grip frame one of us can give you this information. Feel free to leave off a few digits, like 123xxx or K456xxx if you prefer. A description of the gun or photos is also helpful.

You need to post the revolver's serial number up here with any alpha characters and XX in the last two numeric spots and we will tell you when it was made. Or you can buy the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson 3rd addition and you can look up the information for yourself. It contains tons of information on all models of S&W guns.

Thanks guys for the info the numbers I am looking at are

J6528XX

J4494XX

Again thanks for the info and Yes, I be looking into one of those books, looks like some great reading!

Thanks TJ

Thank you.

Can someone help me find the model number of an old .22lr revolver with the serial #23685?
Thanks,
Rich

Good evening, I am a new member to the Smith & Wesson family. I have purchased my first S&W (SD40 VE), and have become the proud owner of my Grandfather's S&W Special CTG Long Barrel, Serial #C119604

I would like to find out when It was made.

Welcome to the Forum.

It probably shipped in 1950-51. S&W kept track of shipping dates, not manufacturing dates.

Likely shipped in mid-1950 (possibly a bit later), but without a factory letter, it's not possible to be precise. Yours would be properly called by collectors a pre-Model 10 Military and Police (M&P) model. S&W adopted a new naming system in about 1957, and it became a Model 10 at about SN C438000.

Thank you much for the information. I have not been back on for a while and appreciate your help on this. I may look further on this. I have heard that possibly the history of this pistol may be determined by the serial #. If so it would be interesting to know when and where my Grandfather got it.

To learn more about the history of your Grandfather's revolver you can spend $50 and submit a Factory Letter request to the S&W Historian.

A factory letter will provide the exact date of shipment, the city, state and dealer name shipped to, and the specific configuration and special features when it shipped.

However, the only "history" the factory will have ends once the gun is initially shipped from the factory.

Best wishes,

Russ
