Shield 40 Camp Gun

Add Magguts +2 kits to your magazines. They cost about as much as another magazine but they work great. On my 9mm the short mags give me 9 +1, which makes it a poor man's Shield Plus. I don't even bother carrying the extended mags any more.
As for carrying spare magazines, it wouldn't matter what gun you are carrying. Always care a minimum of one spare. There is an old saying, "Two is one and one is none." Would you carry just one source of fire when camping? Just one knife? Only one band-aid in your first-aid kit? Magazines can be lost or damaged, and in the case of a malfunction, sometimes dropping the mag is the right way to clear it, in which case inserting a fresh mag is advisable.
The only other thing I would do in your case is to add a TLR-6 to the gun.

jim123321, I had a neighbor retire to Apalachicola in 2015. He bought a boat to fish and joy ride. He went up the river between East Point and Panacea which I think goes into Tate's Hell. He motored around a sharp bend and came upon a campsite. There was a guy wearing a clown suit and makeup cooking on a fire. The weird folk are out there.

Didn't they make a movie kind of like that? Pennywise meets Deliverance.

Actually, I have no idea about a clown in the wilderness movie but "Deliverance" was filmed about a hundred miles NE of here. Franklin county Florida, where my friend moved, has a significant drug problem. He became disenchanted with the area fairly quickly.

Anyone who may be curious about the OP's need for a hiking firearm? Google "Benny Ray Stropp"; arrested 1/31/22 in Franklin county Florida.

Over the years, There have been a few times where its nice having one on you

Day hiking hasn't been to bad, It seems when the sun goes down the idiots come out, Which is why I wanted different points of view, I just got tired of worrying about it, LOL

Planning a trip real soon, The Shield will be the one going this time never went with this low of round count in a mag before,

Yes I did order more Mags, LOL, Its gonna be nice shedding the extra weught as well

Ive enjoyed reading the post on this one, Thanks for the link that was crazy to watch the officer talk about that, Yes those folks are out there.

Clearwater Lake in Ocala has a homeless community living out there, While I dont worry too much on people down on there luck, I do feel sorry for those folks,

Its all the Drugs and crazy living with them as well, When people are desperate no telling what can happen, Which is why I carry a gun

Hiking around the open sage and Pinion/Juniper areas around here with my wife and dogs my Keltec PMR30 is a very viable carry gun, and weighs about the same as my .40 shield but with 30 on board....

I can't think of any part of Florida as "enchanting".... maybe 10 miles offshore.

Good point, Ranger. My MP9L is slightly fatter, heavier and more noticeable on the hip than a Shield, but it's still not bad at all.
For camping/open carry, a full size gun would be fine.
I'd much rather have the Sheild for CC though.

Accuracy advantage at close range is there but minimal. At longer range the Fullsize with 5 inch barrel would be better.
Even though it is a 17+1, I'd probably still carry a least one spare mag.
Just habit I guess.

IIRC, there is no open carry allowed in Florida unless you are actively hunting.

I tend to assume other red states have similar gun friendly laws as Arizona (open carry O.K. and no permit needed for concealed) but see that is not the case.

Maybe you can just buy and keep a small game license on you, and if stopped (say at the mall) while carrying openly just say you're hunting.

Some states have laws that are different enough that you need to pay attention.
During high school in Texas, a friend and I went to a neighboring county where my Grandad had some land, and we proceeded to shoot turtles from a clifftop vantage point (straight down to the LLano River ).

A game warden was waiting at the gate where we had parked, and gave us a ticket for not having a hunting license.
But we were just shooting snapping turtles, a non-game animal!

Game warden- " Too bad, in the state of Texas, if you are outside the county you call home and have a firearm on you, you must also have a hunting license in possession, even if you have no intention to hunt anything".

Camping and Fishing are also open carry

This page from the 2021 legislature does not include such an exception. The 2013 law did. Looks like something got slipped in while the population wasn't looking.

Chapter 790 Section 053 - 2021 Florida Statutes - The Florida Senate

Possession is allowed under the camping/fishing/hunting exception in this chapter.

Chapter 790 Section 25 - 2021 Florida Statutes - The Florida Senate

Only thing I haven't seen mentioned is feral dog packs. My feeling is, you're probably good to go against people, and anything else isn't shooting back, which makes auto reloads pretty easy.

Just in the FL outback yesterday, steel J with hardcast 357's and a couple-three speed loaders of 38 +P LHP. Thought about snakes but don't like giving up one chamber to shot.

Actually saw: one teen, 3 deer.
