Shield 9mm breakage

I have a new Shield 9mm with around 200 rounds through it that I have deemed the perfect off duty gun. I took it to my department range last tuesday and let some officers try it out so they could understand what I saw in the pistol. The trigger stopped working while one of the guys was shooting it so I broke it down to see what happened. It looks like the trigger bar stopped resetting so the trigger is completely dead. I called S&W and told them the story and now they are sending me a Fed Ex label to repair it. It was a little embarassing to have that happen in front of a bunch of cops after telling them how awesome the gun is. I'm a M&P armorer and have never seen this happen to one of their pistols before so I am anxious to see what caused it.

As an M&P Armorer, do you think it's the same problem that some of the early M&Ps had with the "dead trigger", where the sear spring and plunger no longer pushed the sear up or was it a broken trigger return spring?

I think without tearing it down it is like the early dead trigger. The trigger bar won't reset and the sear stays down. I didn't want to tear it down so they could see the issues as is.

Sending it to S&W is probably best since I haven't really heard about dead triggers in the Shield.

The only thing I was going to suggest was a quick spray with a cleaner and then air to the sear area. I saw that work on a couple of M&Ps and it did free up the sear spring and plunger without the need for the upgrade. I kind of doubt that's your problem though.

Tell your partners not to worry, I have a very early Shield, and now have 680 rounds through it without a single malfunction! These were several types of JHP duty ammunition, so it's completely reliable.

It's one of the best carry guns I have ever owned!

Despite your unfortunate experience, it's still a great gun.

S&W sent me a Fed Ex shipping label and picked up the gun last week so I should hear something soon. I will let everyone know what the issue was once they contact me. I will keep the shield and continue carrying it with confidence when I get it back. Stuff happens sometimes.

The Shield we are testing right now has over 14,000 rounds through it.

It doesn't like Winclean but other than that, it's great!

I talked to S&W Friday and they told me that they replaced the sear block. He didn't have any specific details when I asked about the cause but he said he thinks the return spring either jumped off or broke and caused the malfunction. It should be back here sometime today or tomorrow.
