What is your favorite 9mm self defense ammunition? I carry Winchester 115 grain Silvertips.

My 1.0 Shield 9 has been somewhat ammo picky, so I looked for rounds that would fire at least 200 times without a single failure. I started with a list of ammo that meets FBI standards for expansion and penetration. You can see that list here: Service Caliber Handgun Duty and Self-Defense Ammo

Two rounds from that list that worked perfectly in my Shield were Hornady Critical Duty 135g +P, and Federal HST 147g. I carry Hornady Critical Duty rounds, but would not hesitate to carry the HST 147g rounds. (I should note that the Federal HST 124g +P rounds did not work well in my Shield, as they failed to feed about 10% of the time.)

I strongly recommend testing your carry ammo (at least 100 rounds worth) to be sure that it works reliably in your Shield.

Rules for carry ammo.
1. Most important, must be reliable in terms of feeding and extraction.
2. Accurate.

I don't have a Shield, but I like Federal's 147 grain HST standard pressure load in my Model 6946.

I can't agree more, the best ammo in the world is useless unless it goes band every single time and you can hit what you shoot at.

Very well said...

A lot of people are saving their "Lone Ranger" silver bullets................

and shooting the Gold Dot or Federal HST, instead, for their back up ammo
which is a heck of a great idea and with great ammo, to boot !!

I carry fmj. Reliable good penetration and available. I know over penetration liability yada yada. Statistics say I will will have more clean misses than pass thru over penatrations.

Don't have a Shield but for 9x19 carry ammo I still favor the Federal 9BPLE load, (115gr. +P+).

Winchester Ranger T-Series 147 gr. JHP. (The new Black Talon ammo).
When it expands those razor-sharp Talons are like miniature meat grinders.

One family member has a 3" 9mm and I like the fps in the Gold Dot 115gr bullet in my test.
Later, I bought the Federal 147 gr 147 thatworked but was not at POA like the Speer bullet.

However the 147 worked great in my C9 3.5" 9mm pistol at POA.

If you have a 5" barrel, any ammo will work if it feeds w/o problems
but I do like to have at least 400 ft/lbs of energy.
