Hi guys. I have about 400 rounds through my Shield and have experienced quite a few double feeds. I have used several brands of ammo. The firearms instructor I trained with was pretty suprised. Is this a break in issue or something else?

Have others fired it and had the same problem? If so, call S&W CS.

He fired a couple rounds but that's it. I initially had the problem only with 115 gr. I switched to 124gr and everything was fine. But, I had 3 or 4 today. Being a new shooter and being the first time with an instructor some nerves may have played a roll I guess.

CS will probably tell you what they told me - the Shield likes 124g.

Also have a look at the mags to see if the feed lips might have been bent. I've done that myself with a mag loader.

I have had mine for a couple of years and never had that happen at all. What are you calling a double feed? It is a single stack magazine and I see no way you could get a double feed from firing the gun.

That whole 124 grain line you get from smith is a joke... I've got well over 1000 problem free rounds through mine with 115gr.

If you're experiencing true double feeds I don't think that's operator error. I would tell them it happens with both 115 and 124gr just to be safe, and let them pay to send it back to the mothership to be checked out and fixed.

Does it happen with different magazines or only one?

I have a pistol (not my Shields) that was double feeding with one magazine. I took the magazine apart and found that the spring was installed backwards. After fixing it, the problem was fixed.

I cannot say that is your issue, but who knows?

My Shield fires 115 grn stuff without an hiccup at all. In fact, My Shield has never had ANY kind of hiccup at all. But its slide is still a bear to operate -- well over 1K rounds through it. Should be well broken in. I'd get hold of S&W, if its misfeeding, something's not right.

yeah it happens with all 3 magazines. I went out today and no issues.

Mine shoots 115 gr reliably, usually whitbox UMC 115 gr, I have shot over 5000 rounds through it and the majority has been 115 gr since that it what is most available here.

I have over 1600 rounds through mine, all 115gr except when trying out 124gr hollow points. I have only had one session in which I had any issues. I had around five FTEs out of a hundred rounds. I was shooting cheap Monarch ammo from Academy. I could tell the power level on rhose was quite low, so those were chalked up to ammo and not good ole Betsy.

Something else.

The three common causes of malfunctions in semi-auto pistols are:

1) Ammo

2) Magazines

3) Limp-wristing

Find out which one is yours and correct it.

Both my Shields have over 1000 rounds fired and zero problems...maybe I'm just lucky...

are these true double feeds or failure to eject? If your last session had no issues My bet is limp wristing.

Being a new shooter I had to lock the slide back and suck out the magazine. I thought that was caused only by double feeds. If I am mistaken please let me know.
I did take a intro to handguns class recently and I am absolutely not saying that it isn't user error, however I had zero failures with my Glock or Beretta(after it was serviced for a defective slide).

Rack it back like you want to rip the slide off and don't limp wrist. That means steady it with your right hand and hold firmly with your left. Also disassemble your mags and make sure they are functioning properly.

and one more thing -- don't let an instructor intimidate you. No one was born shooting a gun, the instructor learned somewhere along the line and probably understands your nervousness perfectly. Hold the gun tight and don't anticipate the bang, just "cause" it.
