I tried the new S&W Shield at the nearby range today and after the first shot, the slide locked backed and the empty shell did not eject. The range officer said that since I am a lefty I probably hit the magazine release with my trigger finger and popped the magazine. Anybody else who is a lefty have this problem? I am ready to buy one but don't want this problem. Advice would be appreciated.

So you pulled the trigger once, had this issue and gave up? Did it shoot the next 49 rounds ok?

When i was shooting mine i think i rode the slide or slide release on the last shot because it didnt lock back empty. Didnt do it after the next 6 full mags so i wasnt too concerned.

The magazine release is reversible no? Wouldn't that solve your issue. I'm a lefty and soon to be owner so I'm interested to confirm this.

Sorry I believe I am mistaken

No, it isn't. S&W didn't make it an ambi because they wanted to keep it under 1" thick.

I don't think it is.

FWIW, I'm a lefty and have put about 400 rounds down range without doing what you describe.

No.... On the Shield the mag release is NOT reversible. If you want a reversible mag release you will have to go with the 9c or .40c to the best of my knowledge.

IMO, the Shield isn't the most "Lefty" friendly gun out there.:(

1800 rounds down range for my friend who is a lefty - no issues. I have shot about 200 rounds lefty myself (though I am a righty) with no problems O.o

I just did 200 rounds with mine today, both Right and Left handed, 2-hand grip and single... No accidental mag drop, no unintentional lock-back, or unintentional riding of the slide lock... But I'm used to single-stack subcompacts. [shrug]

I'm also a southpaw and I've put 400+ rounds through my Shield. While it's possible that you might have hit the mag release I'm thinking it's not going to be a common problem...

I shoot my full size M&P with both hands and never had any issues with my weak hand. Maybe because of the size, I don't know. Would like to try it with te shield but don't have one yet

'Nother Lefty here.

If the pad of your index finger wraps around the grip when you fire, I dare say that you're a bit too deep into the trigger.

Some of my firearms are ambi and neither I or my lefty cousin have had that issue with any of them. As others have suggested, be more aware of your grip. I have ridden the slide lock of some of my guns by improperly placing my thumb on the slide lock.
