I’ve long been a member of the S&W “Modern Sporting Rifle” forum, however, I’m new to the Shield section. I’ve seen a few negative reports on here as of late, so I thought I would share my good news from the range over the weekend.

I took my new Shield .40 caliber out for its first ride. I was holding my breath to say the least, especially when I pulled the trigger with the extended magazine… but very happy to report that 150 rounds later I did not have one failure of any kind. I put 165 grain Winchester “white box,” 180 grain blazer, and 180 grain Gold Dot ammo through it. I even mixed ammo within the same magazine just for kicks. It performed flawlessly.

The first shot hit dead bull’s-eye at 10 yards, and it consistently shot 4-6 inch groups when firing at a rate of about one shot per second. I was very pleased for my first time shooting the gun.

The recoil was very manageable, and much less than I was expecting out of a smaller gun. I used to own a Springfield XD full-size .40 caliber, and this Shield is far more pleasant to shoot. Rapid fire is tricky, but with practice I would think that double-taps should be a very real possibility.

Anyways, probably TMI, but hopefully this will be helpful for anyone sitting on the fence about this gun. For information sake, my serial number starts with “HAD.” I’m very happy to be part of the Shield family. Happy shooting.

Thanks for your review! I picked up a 40 Shield last night and plan to shoot 40 and 9 out of it

I have some ammo in 40 that was bought in 2000. PMC 165gr and some 180 grn Speer Lawman. That's how long ago I last shot .40 lol

Good report and glad to hear recoil is manageable

I'm glad you like yours. I have two 9mm Shields and get to pick up my .40 Shield tomorrow (I've been waiting since July for the LGS to get this baby in...it finally showed up yesterday, and after the mandatory 48-hour waiting period, it comes home tomorrow!) I was a little concerned about the .40 recoil in a gun this size, but this eases my concerns a bit...I hope to get mine to the range either tomorrow afternoon or Saturday...

Sweet. Thanks for the report. I cant wait to go shoot my 40 shield. I've only put 27 rounds through it so far. Congrats!!
