I just noticed this earlier today. Has anyone seen this on your Shield's slide? It appears to be peening but it's not bare metal. It's about 1/4" to 3/8" aft of the slide lock notch.

I have two in 9mm, one with about 800 rounds and the other with roughly 400 rounds through it. Neither one have these markings.

I only see the extractor, not a slide lock. What the heck is the light bluish colored part, with the swirls on it? Should be the rear of the barrel, by the photo.

The slide is off of the gun and the swirls are from the piece of formica that it's laying upon. As I said, that the issue is aft of the slide lock notch, which is evident in the photo.

OK, I now know what I am looking for. My Shield 40, manufactured May 2012, has the exact same mark. I can see no reason for it, so I doubt it was purposely machined. My guess is it the result of clamping the slide, for a particular machining or assembly step.

With the slide closed, being about 1/4" behind the Slide Lock notch, it looks like that MAY be about where the Forward Slide lock tab might engage the mag Follower. I'm wondering though, when an empty mag is inserted (with the slide forward), if the forward Slide Lock Tab and that dimple (mini-notch?) even touch. [Shrug]

I think the OP is pointing out the what looks like to me ruff edges in the upper part of the inner slide rail edge.. I would almost want to lap the slide to the frame rails to smooth it out faster just incase the corresponding frame rail is causing it.. That;s the only thing I think I see in the photo.. George
I see the indent in the slide just behind the lock notch. Mine has it as well.
I see no functional reason for it. It's not in a critical or even external cosmetic position, so S&W probably doesn't care.
If it is not found on all Shield slides, it may just be a "nick" left by a CNC cutting tool that wasn't programmed properly for a clear entrance or exit path. That can happen, particularly on older machines, if someone changes the speed along that path segment without properly checking the results. (Used to happen all the time with industrial robots if you changed path speed on a "joint move". The actual path would shift a bit, depending on the path segment speed.)

Mine has it as well.
If you look inside the slide you can see a hole that is drilled into the striker channel. This hole is at an angle. Most likely whatever drills that hole into the striker channel also leaves this little mark into the slide rail.
It's not peening, because you can see that it is still parkerized/melonite coated and not bare metal.
