Size difference, and capacity. (9mm)

I like the compact and can't find a Shield anyway... ;-)

Thanks for any help or pics!

No help, no pics. My .40 compact is just fine. Nothing against the shield, but I don't feel the urge right now. That could change in the future though.

I've always felt that the M&P compacts ( Have owned 2 of them) were
a little wide and heavy for me to carry all day long.

Let's hope the new Shield will be much lighter and slimmer.

Hey Kev, nice picture! The M and P Shield 9mm is thinner than the compact, but when it comes to weight it isn't quite as heavy but only by a few ounces. Of course the width and weight are two important factors when it comes to carry pistols. The 40 cal. Shield is the exact same dimensions as the 9mm. I feel the trigger on the Shield is an improvement over the compact. It's an excellent shooter - no complaints there. I have put about 600 to 700 rounds through it with hollow points and ball 115, 124, and 147 grain ammo with zero malfunctions.I carry mine in a Crossbreed IWB holster and the combination is about as comfortable as anyone would want.

What do you want purpose to the pistol to be?
Will it be just for Concealed Carry? Home Defense? A Range Gun?

The Shield is a very nice Concealed Carry pistol. No problems carrying IWB and some (like myself) can even pocket carry it.

The M&P Compact is a great All-Around pistol. Most can Conceal Carry IWB very easily with the 12 round mag and use a Full-Size mag with Mag Sleeve (I forget S&W's name for it) for Home Defense & the range.

If the Shield's not available locally, you can get an idea of size difference by comparing the M&Pc to either a Ruger CL9, or Walther PPS.

The Shield is just a smaller version of the M&P compact and it's size makes is easier to conceal. The grip on the Shield is actually slightly longer than the compacts and I prefer the flush 7 round magazine on mine. With my M&P9c I prefer the pinky extension on the mag. You can't go wrong with either pistol but I feel the compact is easier to shoot accurately. The Shields slender grip requires just the right ammount of trigger finger, otherwise you'll pull shots to the left, the compacts wider grip is not as susceptable to this. I really like both pistols and feel that the Shield will soon dominate the micro pistol market, Smith & Wesson designed it well.
For concealment the Shield has the obvious edge, but for shootability the nod goes to the compact. Try both and see which you prefer, or do like I did and own both.

Comparison video is top notch, thanks. Where can one obtain the sleeves to make the full size magazines work in the 9c? I could use a little more length in the grip, even above the "pinky" extension magazine.

Yup... X-Grip. Many of the favorite accessories stores carry it (MidwayUSA, CTD, etc... Even Amazon.com).
Do a 'Google Shopping' search for S&W X-Grip, S&W M&P X-Grip, or S&W M&P mag Sleeve and you'll get a page or two of hits.

I have a Compact 9 now and am waiting for the second shipment of Shield 9's to hit the shop. As you can see in the pics, the Shield's an easier conceal gun, not just because of the size and single stack mag. Believe it or not, the Compact 9 gets heavy, (12 rd mag and the spare if you carry it too), even with a decent IWB holster. That said, if you can only afford one, get the Compact 9, more versatile.

My cousin has an M&Pc and after handling my Shield wants to get one because it is easier to conceal and he prefers the Shield trigger.

The compact is very easy for me to conceal in a Remora holster. I sometime carry the FS also in a Remora. But, my wife thinks the compact is too heavy and thick, so she ordered a Shield. She is on the waiting list, but I will continue to look. I might end up with one of my own.
