Shipping long guns through mail

Are nonFFL holders permitted to ship long guns through the mail to someone in another state provided it is shipped to an FFL in the receiving state?? My FFL says that any gun must be shipped from one FFL to another to be legal. The way I have read it I believe he misunderstands this law.

Unless WV has its own law requiring you to ship via a local FFL, you are good to go. Quite a few states now require all shipping to go through a FFL.

Some FFLs don't like taking stuff from private individuals because they have no way of checking the DL copy they get is kosher. An FFL can be checked on a database. I also get a FFL cartel vibe from some of them on this subject, too.

Good luck getting UPS to take it from you as a the owner. UPS and FedEx both want to see an FFL shipper these days. It's not required under Federal law, but it is company policy.

I ship thru my FFL. I’d rather do that than roll the dice with USPS as an individual be it a handgun or a long gun. Too many bad experiences with USPS.

Threads like these are of great interest to me. I’m, as one person recently said, “beginning to throw a long shadow”. Kind of disturbing imagery actually.

Time to start letting go of things I’ve accumulated. Most relatives in my family would likely only be interested in their cash value.

Biggest impediment to getting seriously started is the shipping issues. What shipping method's, product legality in some jurisdictions, boxes and packaging materials especially for long guns.

Trying to sell a few test pieces locally hasn’t been particularly fruitful. Honestly think if I posted something “free to a good home”, someone will counter with a “what will you pay me to take it?”.

Go online to UPS.com. Create your own label. Print your label.

Double box your rifle. Pack it very well. Tape. Lots of tape.

If it’s a bolt action or a 10/22 type rifle with a 1 piece stock, maybe take it out of the stock, just to make the box shorter.

Take your rifle to the local hardware store, or UPS store, but preferably the hardware store. Drop it off. No questions asked.
Ive done this numerous times. I send things to my son in Vegas occasionally.

It takes UPS 4 business days to get something from So In to Vegas. Postal non service takes 2 weeks.

In the event that you want to live on the ragged edge you can ship it USPS ground but realize the risk. Insure it like it will be stolen and then get ready for the USPS scuffle of denying the claim. They don't do well with claims and it takes an act of congress to process one.

Here's the regs. You can ship a long gun but be ready to jump through the hoops. They don't like to do it some cases. Depends on the PO you're dealing with. I would suggest that you follow the regs to the letter and and take them with you when you go to mail the firearm. Sometimes they don't know their own regulations. That was my experience.

My friendly local post office turned me down when I asked to send a rifle by USPS to an FFL in another state. Trying to politely discuss/negotiate with them was beyond futile. Shipmygun was the only method I could come up with.

I'm about there, as well. I bought some digital camera gear (Sony camera, macro lens, etc) just for that purpose. My wife: "What'd you buy that for?" I told her: "I'm going to start reducing my firearms' accumulation."

She said, "No way. That's for retirement."

Anyway, my FFL charges $30 to ship handguns for private party transfers. When I start doing this in earnest, I'll list them on Gunbroker with no reserve and no minimum. But, copious, quality photographs are key.

A hardware store??? Around here that is pretty much a Home Depot, TSC, or Menard's. There are no local old time hardware stores, besides I don't recall any that does any shipping of any kind around for years.

We have Ace, Home Depot and Lowes. None of them ship guns. Most of our in home FFL dealers are gone due to a new state law that requires enhanced security systems etc.

A lot of options listed for shipping via UPS are definitely against UPS policy. An individual without a UPS account whether he be an FFL holder or not must ship from a bonafide UPS hub, not a UPS store, not the local drug or hardware store. My friend had a gun shop for years and always shipped via USPS because he could not justify the cost of a UPS account.

It is a shame that postal employees and postmasters do not know the rules. I recommend shipping via USPS Priority Mail, Insured full value. Any other choice is very slow and sad to say not very trustworthy
