A person asked me about shipping a fairly large quantity of gun powder when moving to Alaska.His dad died and he is taking his reloading equipment but must ship it. what is the best way.

Powder is tough. You can't mail it and carrying it through Canada is iffy at best. He may have to barge it.

The only way to powder, primers & ammo up here is via freight forwarders.

Do you know your friends definition of a "fairly large quantity?"
10 pounds? 50 pounds? 100?
As already mentioned, powder can not go by an air carrier that takes passengers. Powder can go on a cargo plane but is limited to 15 pounds. Most carriers will simply refuse it for anything but ground.
There are also limits on how much can be in a single shipment. Common carriers will limit shipments to 48 pounds per box with no more than 100 pounds to a single address in a single day. There will also be a HazMat fee on each box.
Freight carriers do not have weight limits that I recall.
With the cost of shipping, it might just be cheaper to sell it in his fathers state and re-purchase it in Alaska.

I use Span Alaska to take freight from Auburn WA to Alaska regularly, email [email protected] or call them at 800-257-7726

Don't bother checking with FedEx or UPS since they will not even ship ammo to Alaska. I think they will not do so since shipments to Alaska necessarily require some air legs.
