Found this old picture from when I lived on Knotts Island, N.C., Northeastern Coastal North Carolina. I spent every free hour canoeing in the marshes around the island, paddling over to the Outer Banks Beaches, communities of Corolla and Carova Beach. Hunted lots of Nutria (big water rats, introduced pest species), so always had a handgun with me...

One afternoon I saw a fairly large carp feeding in a grass bed, I snuck up on him as quietly as I could, got within 15 yards, and took careful aim with my Model 66 at the only visible part of the fish, the neck just aft of the gills. A careful squeeze of the trigger and the fish flopped once, and was still. 158 grain LSWC at the spine....

Took a picture when I got home, with the fish, canoe, and revolver. This was around 1998, 20 years ago now. This picture reveals some of the things that made life fun for me back then, our little 900 square foot house on Knotts Island, my favorite car that I wish I still had, a 1988 Ford Crown Victoria, my old solo canoe, even my fishing boat I sold in 2004. Ignore the wife's Ford Escort, I hated that car.

I was still on Active Duty in the Navy, so I looked a little trimmer then.....

I hope that you smoked the carp and had a feast. Done properly (cut out the mud vein) they are as delicious as any salmon. Give them a little extra time in the smoker to render the fat.

Yum!!! :D

Never heard of a fish having a neck, but it's your story, not mine!:D

Yeah, Knotts Island is a hidden gem there in the Northeastern corner of the Tar Heel State. An outdoorsman's paradise. I'm not surprised you have such fond memories.
