I do not own a 6-shot DA revolver. I carry only 5-shot revolvers. I would like to play IDPA with what I carry. I am not concerned with the competition with others, only improving myself under pressure. I want to use my M60 Pro 5 shot. Any thoughts? Anyone shot IDPA with a 5-shot revolver?

You certainly CAN do so. Many times IDPA clubs will run a BUG (Back Up Gun ) match for the 5 round revolvers and small auto loaders. Go for it I am sure will enjoy it. IDPA matches will certainly improve things under pressure. Be sure to have three speedloaders and a pouch to carry them in as well as either an IWB holster or OWB that will cover the trigger guard.

Randy,
Thanks for sharing. I realize I will have slower times than the 6 shooters with reloads, but I think learning to shoot well and reload well under the pressure of the clock will help me improve.

Go for it. You should shoot what you carry. I think there is a max round count of 18 rounds (assuming no make up shots). Most stages will have less than that. You would really only be at a disadvantage for stages with 6, 11, 12, 16, 17, and 18 rounds.

Go for it! It can only help improve your skills. I've shot a couple IDPA matches with a 2" Model 60 - the gun I normally carry.

Of course there's no point in comparing scores with the six-shooters. Just consider it good practice under more stress than normal range time.

On occassions, I will shoot my S&W 640 just to see how many other shooters I can beat. I have never come in last in scoring even though the 640 is a 5 shot. Makes the Glock and 1911 shooters madder than heck when I beat them with a 5 shot revolver.

Aloha,

If you compete for self improvement and not "the game" so to speak, then you'll be OK

I used to compete with a M-57(41magnum) wih target loads that were equal to standard 45ACP loads.

Go do it, you'll have a lot of fun.

Thanks to all for your encouraging replies. I will shoot my first IDPA in June and I will use my 5-shot revolvers. Also "bpeddicord" I had to chuckle when you said you make the Glock and 1911 guys mad when you beat them with a 5-shot. I love it. :D

hogdoc ... I posted a thread about shooting my first IDPA yesterday. I used a SIG 228 for my indoctrination, but would very much like to do a pass with a revolver some time soon. I'm of a similar mindset as you ... I'm looking to improve my own skills, not race anyone. If you go through with a five shot revolver, take your time, focus on shot placement, and work on fluid re-loading with either speed strips or speed loaders. You'll love it, and find rather quickly that the "pressure" makes things go a lot quicker.

Have a great time! Good luck ...
