I have defended many deputy sheriffs in wrongful death/excessive use of force cases following shootings. Each of these officers should have been handled with care and understanding following the shootings. Unfortunately, their fellow officers are frequently the most cruel and harmful people in these circumstances. I recommend that all LEO, both active and retired and especially those that have been involved in deadly force encounters, get a copy of "Deadly Force Encounters, Second Edition: Cops and Citizens Defending Themselves and Others" by Alexis Artwohl Ph.D. (Author), Loren W. Christensen (Author). Dr. Artwohl is a brilliant woman. Anyone who has been involved in a deadly force encounter would benefit greatly from this book. I loaned my copy to one of my clients and he asked to keep it. He needed it much more than I. I was happy to give it to him. For those that wish to understand what happens to a person involved in a deadly force encounter should also get a copy. I cried for the officers discussed in this book many, many times.
