Short-Barrel K-Frames

I have no problem carrying my 66-1 2.5" or Model 10 2" any time. OWB is my primary carry with one of my The Slide. IWB carry is via a Quick Clip or Hammar.

Here is some pics of course...

Which Specific Holster is that with your K Frame? Thanks.....Zebulon

nope!

I just can't find a place for them. I love their looks (I think the 2.5" Model 19 is absolutely the sexiest looking handgun ever made) and I love how they feel in my hand, but I can't find a real use for them. I continue to buy them or trade for them because they are so purty, but I always end up selling them or trading them away.

If I'm going to carry a full-sized revolver in a belt holster, I can carry a 4" barrel just about as easily. If I am going to pocket-carry a concealed revolver, the k-frame is just too big and bulky. I recently traded into a Commander sized Kimber Pro-Carry. It carries on a belt holster infinitely more comfortable, and is easier to conceal, than a 2.5" Model 19, or even a 2" Model 10. An extra 7 round mag is less bulky than a speed loader. My 3" Model 36 conceals more easily in a belt holster than did my 2.5" Model 19. Look at Buffalo Bore's offerings in heavy .38 Special and reduced recoil, reduced flash .357; if I remember correctly, the energy from the 3" M 36 is practically the same. To me, the BB heavy 158 grain load in a j-frame isn't nearly as punishing as .357 158 grain regular loads. I just don't even want to shoot full-bore .357 in the 2.5" barrel.

I love K-frames, but I love them in 4" barrel length. I carry them in the field, in the truck or console of the car, but in a climate where I wear khaki pants and Polo-type pull-over shirts without a jacket about 350 days a year, the little j-frame snubs are much more comfortable to carry and a whole lot more concealable.

Anybody else feel this way?

Nope! I'm glad you don't like them as it leaves more for me. I carry a bobbed 3" Mod 65 with a clip draw. 155 gr LHP 38 Police +. The same one every day since 1986.

I love all the k frames but as others have stated, to me the 3" barrel length is just about perfect for on-the-belt carry. I like the feel and balance of the 3" Ks also. I don't use a shoulder holster but 2 1/2" might be better for that. No doubt the j frame snubbies are best for pocket carry.

There is a solution to your problem. Carry a 4" "N" frame for a couple of days, then switch to your 19 snub. It will feel like an alloy frame gun, and all will be right with the world. When it starts to feel heavy again, repeat the process. Hope everyone is laughing with me. Good luck.

A few years ago, in a fit of 1911-itis, I actually sold a 3" M66 for $375 to a friend. (Yes, that's right, $375)
Regretted that unwise decision and yesterday received a 3" M65-3 that I got off of GB. Paid a little too much, but it's my consolation prize to myself for the dumb move of getting rid of the 66.
And now that it's cooled off here, I'll be wearing the M65.

This is one of those "almost" or "just about as" threads.

IE...

The 38 +P is "almost" as powerful as a .357 in a snubbie.

a 4" is "just about as" easy to conceal as a 2 1/2".

Carrying that logic to its illogical conclusion ------ I present the perfect CC weapon --- You need no other.

I carried a 2 1/2" 19 in a Bianchi Pistol Pocket for many years --- at a time when I really needed to carry. I now carry a Model 38 in a pants pocket most of the time, because pocket carry is simpler for me.

With the 19, I was MUCH better armed --- I could hit targets more quickly, more accurately, more times in fewer seconds and much harder than with my Model 38.

Carry what you want, (I certainly will) but playing the "almost" and "just about as" game leads down the road I described above.

Those aluminum J frames (and I really like 'em) aren't Model 19s.

Srigs, I like the stocks on your 66. Can you tell me the manufacturer, model, and where you got them? Thanks. I want a pair like that.

Having shot and carried not only S&W K-frame snubs but also their Colt counterpart the Detective Special, I can tell you that their greatest appeal is that they offer the coveted "sixth shot" in a package not much larger than a J-frame and shoot like a full sized service handgun. For me, with the right holster and grips, they're not all that more difficult to conceal.

Now, if only the missus would just let me handle the damn Colt from time to time... But I digress. :p

Those are Hogues. I had them on a M-65 that I still kick myself for selling a long, long time ago. They're one of the finest grips you can get for a RB K-frame IMO.

As for model no., depends on what kind of wood you want them in. My old ones were in Pau Ferro, mod no. 19300.

I have read some who say that the short/snub K-frames are faster to draw, due to the shorter barrel clearing the holster quicker, as well as being harder for an assailant to grab in a scuffle.
Just a couple of things to think about.

Also,

I am kinda the same way. If I wanna carry a K I'd probably go with my 4" 66.
I would rather go with my J though just for comfort.
I'm sure there is a place for them, I just haven't found it yet.

The Glock 23, a compact auto in .40 S&W caliber, takes up the same space as a 2 1/2 inch K frame, holds 13 rounds in the magazine, has better stopping power and is more controllable to shoot. While the Glock 23 may be more "practical," the K frame is infinitely better looking and the K frame evokes strong memories of "happier days." :)

You are correct. Midway generally has them in stock.
