I am looking up info on differences between a 22 outdoorsman and my 4 screw k22, i can't find when long action went to short and matte blue years in my sswc.

plus is there any large differences i should know of. i intend to buy and shoot one very nice example of an outdoorsman with my other older smith.22s

which does each poster prefer of either for fun use.

All K-22 Outdoorsman revolvers (K-22 First Model) are long action.

All postwar K-22 Masterpiece revolvers (K-22 Third Model) have the short action. This includes five-screw, four-screw, and three-screw revolvers

There is a rare and expensive in-between model issued only in 1940 called the K-22 Second Model, or K-22/40. It is also a short action revolver (the very first short action K-frame, in fact).

I don't have a K-22/40, but I have specimens of the other varieties. Both types are great fun to shoot, but my favorite K-22 for shooting is a 1951 .22 Combat Masterpiece (Pre-Model 18) with a four inch barrel. For some reason I can shoot this one more accurately than any other S&W .22.
