I have an M&P-15T but I want the look of the M&P15-X. Is this something a competent gunsmith could do, ie shorten my existing rail and add the front sight/gas block assembly?

I have this:

But I want this:

The FSB can be removed and a gas block could be put in place, but how that would fit with your existing rails I am not sure. Maybe do a search here and see if anyone has done a similar thing. M4Carbine.net

Does the MP15T have a carbine length or mid length gas system on it? It has the Troy 10" mid-length rail on it, but it might be a carbine length gas system, I'm not sure.

If it's a carbine length, it would not be difficult for a gunsmith that knows AR's to remove the 10" rails and put on the 7" rails the MP15X uses, and a std front sight base.

You could then sell off the 10" rails and get some of the money you are spending back. Or, you could sell your "T" and buy a "X". Since a lot of folks spend money to go in the opposite direction you are looking at, it might be easier to do that.

If it's a mid-length gas system, you would have to change the barrel too.

Or you could just buy a good upper assy. that meets your needs. Since the "X" doesn't have a free floating handguard like your "T" does, you could buy something like this...

BCM Standard 16" M4 SOCOM Upper Receiver Group

and add a 7" carbine railed forearm like this...

Tactical Drop In Hanguard for you AR15 or M4 with a Carbine Gas System

I would not do what you are wanting to do - but it's your gun.

Take care,
Bob S.

Thanks Bob...took your advice, got the Troy 7" rail. Bought a regular FBS which will be installed by a local gunsmith. Then I will sell my 10" rail with the Troy folding buis. Will probably post on these boards once I am ready to sell it.

I think you took a good route to get what you want (assuming correct length gas system). The Troy rails and sights are quite highly regarded, and I would be amazed if you have any trouble selling them. I have seen a few people post that they wanted the M&P logo-ed Troy sights for their M&P15. I'd like the front sight, but I'm still recovering from my EOTech purchase:eek:. And I wouldn't want the rail.

I think that S&W is using the carbine length gas system for all or most M&P15s, but I have never examined a 15T. A quick peek under the rail to see where the gas block is will confirm your good to go.

Good luck with it, hope it turns out exactly as you want. My M&P15OR just has the MagPul MOE front hand guard (carbine length), MagPul MBUS (that's why I'd like your front sight, the poor plastic thing is baking on my gas block), and EOTech holo. I couldn't be more pleased, because it's exactly what I wanted.

Do you have the newer M&P labeled Troy with the standard front sight profile or the older one with the H&K style profile (round)?
If it's the older H&K style sight I would very much like to purchase it from you when your ready to sell. I have a M&P15T with the newer Troy front sight and would really like to have the older style. PM me if you're interested.

Thanks! :)
