Jo, I don't know that you'll get a definitive answer without going to S&W or Lew Horton, exclusive distributor of the Shorty 45 models.

What you'll find by reading the posts on here, going back to 2009, is "guesstimates" by Shorty 45 owners. For what it's worth, here's what I found.

There were two Shorty 45 models, the first (Shorty 45) produced in 1996 and the second in 1997 (Shorty 45 Mark II). The first models came with fixed sights; the second came with adjustables.

Shorty 45s are, at the heart, 4513 models that were assembled at the Performance Center with all of the fine workmanship and additional features offered there. These were all stainless slide with aluminum frame models from the Performance Center and are single-stack traditional double action pistols. Owners are very loyal to them and consider them among the finest 45s ever produced by the PC.

There are more of the Shorty 45s than the Shorty 45 Mark IIs. Best guesstimates seem to be that there were around 1,200 total pistols, possibly in runs of 500 or so at a time, with a couple of hundred of the Mark IIs and the rest the Shorty 45s. Take these numbers with a grain of salt, as they are based on serial numbers observed, and the "feel" of experienced hands here, based on availability for sale, of the Mark IIs. The Mark IIs serial numbering appears to have begun at or around 1000, and the highest observed here was referred to as something over 1100.

There apparently were, within these runs, about 125 all-black Shorty 45s, of which perhaps only one has actually been seen (and photographed) for a thread on the Forum.

I know that doesn't answer your questions exactly, but it's about as good as I think you'll get, if you rely on the information here only. Which is usually pretty good, I think.

My Shorty 45 is in the 170 range of serial numbers, and I think very highly of it.:D

Nice post Virgi!

I agree that there doesn't seem to be an accurate answer to how many were made.

Although I disagree that they were the best 45 made by the PC. I think they were/are the best 45 made. Period. Mine will feed anything that will fit the mag/chamber, including an empty case, from the mag.

And accuracy? The first eight rounds out of my first one were my handloads, the Lyman 452424 loaded to about 800 feet. They all went into a group that would hide completely behind a US quarter. I didn't think I could shoot that well! :) (I can't actually, please don't ask me to do it again.)

I contacted Lew Horton via email to inquire them about the Shorty 45 production #s. Their reply was 640 produced. I assume that they were the only sellers of the Shorty...???

Very interesting, Jughed. Thanks for sharing this with all of us!

....attached an email letter from LH with production #

Jughed, this is outstanding! Documentation, rather than simple word of mouth, is so important in getting correct information out there. I appreciate your putting this out there for all of us. Good job!

Documentation of number of Shorty 45 Mk 2's

I know this is an older thread, guys, but Shorty 45 owners, you will be interested in this:

On a separate thread recently, Forum member Shorty 45 Mk2 has posted a copy of a Lew Horton letter he received following his inquiry on production of the Mk 2 models.

http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-wesson-semi-auto-pistols/376761-my-new-45-a.html

The Lew Horton rep confirms that 179 of the Mk 2's were produced, and he also repeats the 640 number of the Shorty 45s that member JugHed440 previously provided to this thread.

So this seems pretty substantial documentation of the production numbers on our favorite pistols! :D

Many thanks to Shorty 45 MK2 for following up on this, too!

You're welcome Vigil, I wanted to know more about this fine Smith and all I could find was people talking about how great it is, but no real numbers except for the number provided by jughed440.

Also want to say the rep (Earl Minot) was very fast in responding (less than 5 mins.) to my inquiry. He sent me the form the next day.
