Finally got to shoot a match with my 617. I really enjoyed it more than shooting my Black Mamba. There's just something about revolvers that fit my hands better.

I shot an abbriviated Steel Challenge Match. We could only shoot 5 of the 8 stages because another club took over one of the larger bays for a Bullseye Match. Here we are trying to go as fast as possible and watching them shoot 5 shots in 10 seconds.

Well, I did pretty good. I came in second in my class. Shot right around my average so I'm pretty happy. I shot in Rimfire Pistol Iron against the autos. They don't distinguish revolvers instead of autos in Rimfire.

Typical, I smoked a couple of the stages and trashed a couple going too fast. At least I never needed a reload with my DS-10 Speed Loaders. I also never needed to clean my cylinders while shooting Federal BYOB 40 grain bullets. That stuff is clean in my revolver and it's fortunate that I have about 15,000 rounds of it. When that's done I'm going to switch to Blazers.

I shot with a great group of guys. All of us were around 70 years old and told the stories of our youth and how we shot much better. Oh the lies...

It was one of the most fun matches I've been in.

Well there you go. It's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Now that's a great way to spend the day! Good on you getting out and shooting that fine piece of hardware.

I just had my Model 17 and Model 18 out a few days ago and had a blast shooting pinecones at 25 yards. Those S&W K Frame Rim Fires are just too much fun.

I shoot the second and third Sunday at Ben Avery.

Second Sunday is Deer Tribe and 3rd is Cactus Match League. Both are on Practiscore.

Have shot our Steel Challenge with my Model 17. We usually shoot seven steel plate and a stop plate Since that is more shots then my 17 would hold, so had to do a reload. We chose to go with a "New York Reload", I used a Model 18 as my reload..........

I'm going to put the 617 to work tomorrow for the first time with open sights I'm probably gonna drill and tap for a scope mount or switch to a bead sight I'll wait and see tomorrow. Is there a web sight for your group I used to know it but it's been a while.

Have fun.

I've got my 617 all cleaned and ready to go along with all my DS-10 speed loaders and loading blocks.

Very nice group. It only gets better.
I actually did shoot some one hole four shot groups with flyers !! Need a scope to really get accuracy results need to drill and tap the receiver for a weigland base then decide on scope options probably will set up as a hunting rig my freedom arms will be my silhouette rig as it does shoot one hole groups !! I am pretty happy with the gun so far it's trigger feels like 2 lbs of butter in the middle of summer. It was a lot of money to get this far with it but a great learning experience working on the revolver and a sense of satisfaction doing your own work otherwise it would be languishing in some gun shop for months on end and might not get the same job I did on my own??

Well, I got the results just now. I thought I had a good day going and wow was it great. I really like shooting revolvers.

I bested my times by 17 seconds today. It felt great.

I only had one problem. I got up for one stage, Accelerator, and my gun did not fire any rounds in the cylinder. I took it to the safety area and took it apart. The extended firing pin I had in it broke.

This is after about 5 years so. It just wore out. Problem two, the mainspring slipped off the hammer strut, an easy fix.

I couldn't get the retainer pin that holds the firing pin out. My big fat fingers. Fortunately one of the guys in the squad used his knife and was able to capture the pin. I had a new firing pin with me and installed it.

Got everything back together and shot that stage without any misses. Glad I made it back in time to not miss my squad.

I even did great on 5 to Go. That's been my nemesis lately. It's an easy stage but I've been running it too fast with my auto. My timing with the revolver was perfect, I never missed. It was so smooth.

I finished up on Smoke & Hope. That's normally my fastest stage but I've been known to have a few misses when going too fast. I point shot the stage except for the stop plate. Again, my fastest stage.

As I said, I like revolvers. It was a dream to shoot, using my 617 with DS-10 speed loaders and loading blocks. I had all my ammo loaded up Friday so I didn't have any extra work to do today.

It wasn't all that long ago that all we had were tube style sights for our revolvers and they worked great. There's no need to go to a reflex style.

I still have a PDP4 Tasco that I use from time to time.

SCSA ( Steel Challenge Shooting Association ) has all the information you need for their matches.

ICORE is designed strictly for Revolver Shooters and has lots of information.

I also spend a lot of time on YouTube looking at Steel Challenge videos.

You have to shoot against the auto loaders since there is no division for rimfire revolvers. Not a problem, I'm only competing against myself and trying to get back to where I was 20 years ago. Age and injuries have kept me down but I'm getting better.
