My son, who manages several gun stores/ranges, is fortunate to be able to attend the annual SHOT Shows at the Sands Convention Center in Las Vegas. I call him "Gun Son"...hey, that would be a good name for a new show on the Outdoor Channel! Anyway, COVID hampered the shows for a couple of years, but Gun Son attended the 2023 show last week. He told me that it was even more phenomenal than usual this year, with over 2500 vendors. He walked 7-8 miles per day and was impressed with many of the new products being introduced. Besides new firearms (e.g. S&W's M&P 5.7, FN510, LWRC's SMG .45, RIA's RIA 5.0 and VRF14, etc.) and ammo, everything imaginable that's related to the firearms industry, hunting and shooting, is on display. There was a vendor with lightweight modular foam range barricades (they assemble like LEGOS) for various shooting sports and police/military training, and they have "people" panels and "vehicle" panels, shoot houses, etc. Great for Action Steel, IDPA, USPSA, etc. Apparently there wasn't much concern about the ATF's Pistol Arm Brace ruling because there were tons of them at the show. I'm sure that over the next few weeks hundreds of these new products will be showing up online. I'm still picking Gun Son's brain about stuff he saw at the show. Just FYI.

I was there all 5 days and was impressed with the crowd and number vendors. Regarding the pistol brace, it seemed ATF was just going through the motions. Reading between the lines, I think they know their charade will likely go down in flames in the courts, especially after the CA5’s recent ruling on bump stocks; but they have to sing the company song.

So S&W jumping on the 5.7x28 Bandwagon, huh? Interesting... Hopefully this will encourage more manufacturers to develop/produce more ammunition, because that's really the main weakness of the cartridge, that there really isn't much in the way of ammo selection for it, it's very expensive, and unfortunately all of the supposedly amazing performance the cartridge has to offer is unavailable to the civilian market, so until somebody makes ammo for it that allows it to perform as well as the Military/Law Enforcement rounds — minus the armor-piercing capabilities — it will remain more of a novelty cartridge.

The last one I attended was 2009, but I did get the opportunity to attend last year’s show. But I had another problem that prevented my going. At my age, I don’t believe I could handle all of the walking. I’d probably need to rent one of the electric carts.

Having to work at both every year, I still prefer NRA over SHOT.
