Probably heading to the West Palm Beach Fl, gun show in a couple of weekends. Any recommendations for gauge and brand of shotgun to purchase? Home defense use, already have some 12g shells that were given to me a while ago. Thanks in advance.

Budget and action preference will help.

I will answer your gauge question: 12 ga. More options in ammo and guns out there.
 
Check out the new Weatherby 12 gauge black 5+1 for home defense. Just got one and love it.

It's the Weatherby PA-459...should be about $390. Comes with pic rail.
I attached the Sure Fire X300 light under the barrel...lights up out to 200'.

This shotgun is all you need for 2-legged or 4-legged critters with bad intentions!

My recommendation would be a 12 gauge Mossberg 590A1 Special Purpose Model # 51663 with a red ramp front and ghost ring rear sight, and the extended magazine tube (9 +1). If 10 rounds of 000 buck shot don't solve your problem, you probably need a belt-fed weapon. ;) Mossberg also makes the Model 500 Special Purpose, some variants of which look similar to the 590A1, but the 590A1 is heavied-up with thicker barrel walls, receiver, metal trigger guard and safety button to meet military specifications. This weapon is a beast -- you cannot break it unless you really try hard.

A variant used to be the standard issue combat shotgun of the Marine Corps, and for all I know it may still be.

And, they are utterly reliable and inexpensive.

I own pumps, doubles, and single shots. I feel about as well armed with one as the other. If I were taking doors with a SWAT team, I would want either a semi-automatic or pump riot gun. For home defense, I am fine with a break-open H&R Topper, barrel cut to 20 inches, with a couple of extra buckshot in a cuff. 12 gauge, 2 3/4". Spend some time on a dove field with a single shot or double gun and you will become very proficient at quick "tactical";) reloads. Do a youtube search for Clint Smith with a single shot shotgun. You will see what a viable tool a single shot is for home defense. A good double "coach gun" is twice as good.:D I have good, but cheap, single shot shotguns stashed in trucks and outbuildings at the farm. No telling when I might run up on a varmint.
 
Remington 1100. Winchester pump action. Sorry to all you plastic lovers. I prefer cold steel and polished wood. Guess that's why there's chocolate and vanilla!
 
If you're looking used, you should be able to get a Remington 870 under $300 or a Mossberg 500 or 590 for around $225. I'd have to look at several to get those prices, but it can be done. Gauge? 12 or 20, whichever you are comfortable with. Unless the shells you were given are either buckshot or slugs, I wouldn't use them for anything but target practice. Bird shot may or may not do the job.

That's my $0.02 worth, and it's worth every penny you paid for it. :D
 
When I went looking for an HD shotgun I went with the 12 gauge Remington 870. The other one I looked at was the Mossberg 500, i just happened across the 870 first.
 
My choice Remington 870. RELIABLE!

Likely there will be more 870s offered, than any other brand or model.

Magazine extensions readily available for Remington.

12 Gauge or 20 Gauge (If you want lower recoil.)
Ammo easy to find and often on sale.

NO 410 / 16 gauge / 28 gauge - limited choice of ammo
and it is never on sale.

Use Buckshot!

Wal-Mart has 870 Express for $277.95 in Paducah, KY

Good used ones can be had for $200 - $225 in my area.

Thanks for all the input, don't feel like waiting for the gun show now. Best if I do, but will certainly check out some of the local dealers beforehand.
 
Ten minutes work with a hacksaw and you can shorten the barrel on any old beater shotgun that you find and open the pattern right up. Just remember to measure twice and cut once, and keep it about 18.5 to 19".

I paid almost nothing for an old J.C. Higgins (High Standard) pump - amongst my other guns - and gave it that treatment. Just use a file when you're done to square things off.
 
I bought a Remington 870 Express 18.5 in barrel strictly for HD. After I patterned it, I was so impressed with the shot pattern, it has now become my favorite Pheasant gun (when blocking). Not pretty, but dependable to the core.
 
I recently purchased a Mossberg 500 Persuader with a M4 style stock
which I enjoy shooting... minus 3" Magnum '00' buckshot.
Oooh, my shoulder.
I downsized to 2 3/4" '00' buckshot.

For tactical loading, I realized I have my shotgun shells mounted
incorrectly in the photo.
Brass heads should be flipped to bottom of the shellholder.
