Should I buy an M&P 10

So with all the M&P 10's out there, a few continue to have issues???

If I buy one and it has issues?? will/can S&W bring it up to speed???

If not an S&W, would you buy a Rock River or Armalite, or another, feel free to pm me if you would rather say something that might get your bud's fired up, lol....

I really like the 308, I may just buy another bolt rifle? Tikka, etc, etc...

If an AR platform, I'd be happy with an A-2 stock, and a slick stainless barrel, just something to scare the coyotes with....

You saw my comments in the other thread. So no need to repeat here. I will add that S&W offers a lifetime warranty. So, if there is an issue, they should fix it. As long as the rifle is stock.


I don't know enough about Rock River AR10s to comment.


Armalite AR10s follow a different format from LR308/LR25 format rifles. So, your parts options will be limited as a result. As far as I know, they are the only one to use that format.


I've seen some good reviews and comments on the DPMS. There have been remarks that they are heavy though.


Your best bet might be to get some reviews and gear reviewer comments on them outside of manufacturer specific forums. Asking about other brands on a S&W forum might not get all the answers you want or need. Kinda like asking a Dodge forum about Ford or Chevy trucks.

In my unsupported opinion, I think that most 'issues' with the majority of any semi-autos, is operator error in some form or another, and, most of that has to do with proper cleaning/lubrication of the firearm.

Yes, this was the big "coyote hunt weekend" here in Central Obamastan.... lots of different styles and calibers of weapons??

I don't know how the coyotes fared, but I'm sure there was a lot of Budweiser and associated beverages shared, and a good time was had by all, lol..

So I avoided that, and put a few rounds through a really ugly Savage Tactical, (it will shoot), but its heavy, and a few rounds through my little Husqvarna 4100 light weight in 06 Govt, it is a real "butt kicker"...

My new Nikon would not function in Maynard P's amazing, but seriously complex mounts, bell and everything was fine, but the bolt banged on the rear bell when operated....

All the AR platform rifles are heavier, and I looked at the chassis rifles, and they are ridiculously heavy.

I haven't found an M&P 10 anywhere in captivity here in Central Obamastan, and frankly, any AR platform is in grave danger here on the grand prairie, I'd hate to have a new baby and have the Federali's come and take it away???? LOL

I only had a few hiccups with both my M&P10 and M&P15 in the very beginning when they were new. After about 100 rounds they eat anything now. I don't want to get rid of them.

For the same reason I avoid Springfield Arms products, Rock River Arms was in the same boat-- if you value gun rights i would say that, despite their attempts to cover their actions as companies, avoid RRA (and SA).

M&P10 is a great platform, +1 on DPMS as well.

I think even though most of us are S&W fans to some degree, there are other brands and types of firearms we have used or own that work great.

I am a big fan of S&W products but, chose to purchase a DPMS Oracle, LR-308. Prior to the purchase, I reviewed ever available option and read the reviews.

The reviews, videos and comments about the DPMS, along with the price point, convinced me to go with the DPMS. Although I am a high power rifle competitor, I knew that the accuracy probably wouldn't be sub MOA but, I have been pleasantly surprised.

With my hand loads, this rifle is capable of superb hunting accuracy. I wouldn't attempt to use it for XTC matches but, for deer and varmint hunting it fills the bill.

My M&P 10 has not had even 1 ftf that wasn’t the rounds fault as far as I know. My M&P 15 PSX (piston model) has performed flawlessly. I learned proper use and maintenance of this platform while seeing in the USMC as an Infantry Rifleman (mos 0311) and we did a hell of a lot of shootin’ and cleaning on m16 a1’s/a2’s/xm177’s (yes I’m that old!) so I guess that may in part be a factor in my success. Proper BREAK-IN is essential to these weapons as well, as per my experience. Of course results ma differ. I never “mag-dump” with my weapons. Ever. I clean and lube them during and after every shooting session. No fancy chemicals, just good old fashioned CLP Breakfree. So, my two cents worth. Works for me. Maybe it will work for others. The Corps expirence hasn’t let me down yet. Semper Fidelis. ������������������������

My M&P10 was great stock. Once I messed with the gas system (free float handguard the required a new gas block), I began to have problems. If you have no intention of messing with the gas system, I think it's a great choice.

Thank you Gents for all your help and advice, I do have coming a new Wilson Combat Tactical Hunter that a young man had purchased in Jan, and is now going into USAF, so it was pricey, but I got a decent deal, about 1,000 bucks less than he paid...

All the M&P 10s that I found had muzzle devices and folding stocks, so I didn't really find anything in the configuration I wanted. The Wilson is a WC-10 so is a light weight billet set up, and lighter than the S&W.

I'm looking forward to seeing it, so I'll give an update when it arrives, again thank you for all your help, and outstanding observations, billy

Well that's great news, the more I educated myself, the pickier I became. In the end the Wilson is closer to the configuration I was looking for, and I like the light weight components. Armalite and Rock River do have a lot of proprietary parts, as does the Smith?

Wilson has a small dedicated staff who build and test their WC-10's, so it should be functional out of the box. Signed test target and build sheet, but lots more money!
