Should I join the NRA?

The NRA does an excellent job of protecting gun rights, but that's not their only purpose. We seem to leave out the fact that the NRA gives hundreds of thousands of dollars to clubs for building and maintaining rifle ranges, not to mention the shooting programs they fund and support.

The best of these is, in conjunction with the CMP,(Civilian Marksmanship Program) is the junior programs. Kids are the future of our shooting sports, that alone, to me is more then enough reason to support both the NRA and the CMP.

Endowment member here. Both son and daughter are Life Members.
Benefits are that they are the ONLY organization to be respected by our government officals.
If you look under member services, you'll find out about other benefits.

The NRA used to stand for civilian marksmanship and safety. Now they are mouthpieces for the republicans. Nothing like having "2nd amend" equal "republican gun owner only". As a liberal gun owner the NRA tells me in all so many ways, we don't represent your kind of gunowner.

We have the Texas Rifle Assoc here in Texas that is similar. Wonderful to see gunowners but only republican gunowners.

So to the original poster, join up if they'll represent you.

Same reason I don't care for the AARP, shills for the liberals. :)

LIFE NRA HERE. :D

The best reason is helping finance, with your membership payments, the NRA legislative action and lobbying. Charlton Heston was in Tennessee in 2000 getting gunowners to the pols, which made the anti-gun candidate lose his home state, and as a result, the Presidential election. Politicians have, with a few exceptions, shied away from stirring up gun owners. We are just too passionate to them and can't wait to vote against them. The NRA spearheads this effort. And very successfully in the last ten or twelve years.

I may not agree with every decision the NRA ever made but I do believe the NRA has the clout to fight for our gun rights.

Dan

I am amazed that on a gun forum the question would even be asked. Of course you should be a member of The National Rifle Association! Whether you realize it or not, they are the oldest Civil Rights organization going and they strongly fight for your Second Amendment rights whether you are a member or are sitting on your butt complaining about the various mailings they send or you "don't want to be on their list", or a host of equally assine reasons. Man up and do your part, join today and remember the old saying, "We better all hang together or we most certainly will hang seperately"

Totally agree. The NRA needs the support now, more than ever.

The insurance benefit is very good for just $25 for your first year membership. There are discounts for various things like hotels, car rental, etc.

Yes, you should join. The main service they offer is protecting and preserving our Second Amendment Right.

Too bad the NRA hasn't been focused on marksmanship and safety as much as they have been focused on influencing elections.

Thank God the NRA has focused on defeating anti-gun candidates.

That said, NRA supported one of the most liberal Democrat members of the House of Representatives, Sanford Bishop, from the district in which I vote. I actively opposed Bishop, and donated money to his opponent. I wish NRA had supported my candidate, but I understand how the endorsement process works. If NRA were to dump a candidate whom they had supported, even if that candidate had continued to vote pro-2nd Amendment, their endorsement wouldn't be worth much. You will have a tough time convincing me, though, or other gun owning voters in my district that NRA is a Republican organization. Bishop has betrayed us in the past, and I don't trust him.

If it seems to you like NRA supports an inordinate number of of Republicans, then you might need to take a look at who is and is not a supporter of the 2nd Amendment.

The NRA supported a pro 2nd Amendment Democrat in the District North of me. She lost by the largest majority of any incumbent in last year's elections. She had always supported the NRA and they supported her. The Republican who won is also pro 2nd Amendment.

How many pro 2nd Amendment positions have you seen the ACLU take?

Huh. I'm more conservative than the average Republican, and I often think that the NRA is too liberal. The fact is that their endorsement of candidates takes into account ONLY that candidate's stance on 2A. That said, I'm a member anyway. They may not be perfect, but they're the best we've got, and if you're not a member you'll have no chance to make it better.

I wish they could focus on that more. But since the leftist wingnuts have demonized guns and ignored common sense and personal responsibility to the point of trying to restrict my rights, I'm glad they choose to try to influence elections toward those who will protect my rights, whether they have "D" or "R" by their names . . . .
