Should I join the NRA?

Anyone that wants to maintain their freedom and rights to own a gun should be a member.

Oh, and how about every once and a while, kick $20.00 (the price of one box of ammo) their way to help pay for the fight.

I have belonged for many a year and I feel my membership dues have helped myself and all gun nuts keep their rights.

The more the merrier. It's fun to watch the left-wingers cringe when you tell them "I'm the NRA."

This is my point. I am a "left winger." And a gun owner. You apparently think its one or the other. The NRA doesn't offend me as much as NRA members sometimes. Speaking for myself, I don't join clubs when the members think I'm less than them.

Who exactly are you alienating? Liberal leaning gun owners. Are these gun owners you feel you need to alientate? Have enough on your side without all the pro-gun help out there?

Have your fun. This is you alienating pro-gun people and risking MY rights by your stereotypical assumptions.

Validate my statement with your general reasoning. Have fun.

I am an NRA member and proud of it.I'm a retired police officer and recommend membership to every gun owner.I am a republican and have voted for democrats and still will when i find a good one.

Simmer Down, you and I could probably sit down with a few pitchers of beer and have a good political debate for hours, and we'd probably be fighting each other as to who was going to buy the next pitcher. The NRA probably has more right wing members, granted but they endorsed two Democrats in House districts that touch mine. They are pretty much a one theme oriented organization. They will never endorse a Barbara Boxer, but they will endorse a 2A supporting Dem. like John Dingall. Heck they almost supported Harry Reid. As stated earlier they aren't perfect but they are why we have 2A still around.

You could also join to keep an eye on your enemies. ha ha :D

My former congressman was A+ rated by the NRA and he was a Democrat. He got the NRA's endorsement.

THe NRA is a single issue organization-the 2nd Amendment.

Like Lee said-you have to protect the means (guns) first, then you work on all the other issues-safety, match shooting, hunting, etc.

Just joined this week after reading this thread. I'm not concerned with their politics, just their mission. I don't consider myself on the left or right. Plenty of crackpots on both sides of the aisle!:D

I got a personal phone call from Wayne LaPierre today! :)

He said that right now, more than ever, is the time to support the NRA....

He said that the U.N. is attacking our gun rights...and they won't stop until the U.S. has no guns in the hands of civilians....

...and worse yet, they're doing it right here...on U.S. soil...at U.N. headquarters in New York City.

...then a nice lady came on the phone and asked how much I'd like to donate.

Oh well...at least it wasn't a bill collector.

Simmer down, no malice, no challenge here, just a serious question: Just exactly how pro-gun are you? Do you think, for instance (as some other members of this forum have expressed), that Florida's or Georgia's qualifications for obtaining a concealed carry permit are "too lax"? Do you think certain firearms, like semi-automatic AKs or ARs are too easy to obtain? Do you think it is reasonable for me to be able to walk in my local gun store, buy a Glock and a couple of 30 round magazines and a 250 round pack of 9mm ammo and walk out with my purchase in 15 minutes or less? Do you think I need to be required to report every firearms purchase from a private individual to a state or Federal registry? What about multiple purchases? I have bought a half-dozen guns since Thanksgiving. Should that put me on some kind of "watch him" list? There is about to be a flurry of legislation proposed at the Federal level intended to restrict firearm/ammo/magazine acquisition and ownership in one way or another. Can you think of any new laws, short of outright prohibition/confiscation/criminalization of firearms and their ownership, that would have realistically averted the tragedy in Tucson?

I realize it is possible (and I even am personally acquainted with a few) for a leftist liberal to be a staunch supporter of the 2nd Amendment, but you have to admit, it is really pretty unusual.

I pointed out in a thread in the 2nd Amendment forum that compromise is necessary to the democratic process. I am not an absolutist, and I believe in "reasonable restrictions." (That statement right there will probably get me some flames from some on here.) I get the feeling, however, that my idea of "reasonable restrictions" and yours are very different. I believe you when you say you are a gun-owner and a left winger, but I'm betting that you are not really all that pro-gun.

Am I wrong?

If so, I apologize in advance.

I don't need to qualify my degree of pro-gun. My point that I stick to is the NRA and members could do some calibration to involve all Americans. Watch the left wingers cringe? Prove your pro-gun-ness?

In short, you are wrong.

The NRA used to stand for civilian marksmanship and safety. Now they are mouthpieces for the republicans. Nothing like having "2nd amend" equal "republican gun owner only". As a liberal gun owner the NRA tells me in all so many ways, we don't represent your kind of gunowner.

We have the Texas Rifle Assoc here in Texas that is similar. Wonderful to see gunowners but only republican gunowners.

So to the original poster, join up if they'll represent you.

Could this possibly be because the Democrats are the Party that consistently introduces legislation and votes to restrict gun rights and the Republicans are the party that consistently supports gun rights?
I don't know of one instance where a Republican politician introduced anti gun legislation.
The NRA is a single issue organization. If the parties reversed their stances on gun ownership tomorrow, the NRA would be backing Democrats.
If we didn't have the NRA we would be in the same boat as Canada, the UK and Australia.
I support them as much as I can.

Your reasoning is flawed. I am not the Democratic party. I am a liberal gun owner. Try to focus here.

Should I join the NRA?

Asked, and answered.
You decide for yourself. If not counted in the ranks, you're absent from the fight.

We shall now move on from the political discussion, which is banned on this board, by the way.

Simmer down, heed your name. ;)
