Saw a 686-1 Silhouette with 6" barrel yesterday. The gun is in about 90% condition and has the sweetest trigger. It doesn't come with the box but it does have the original target grips.

The guy was asking $699. Should I get it? Is the price too high?

I don't see the price of 686s going down, so I'm with the post above. How badly do you want it? Who cares if it is near the top of what they are going for, if you really want it? It's just money. Offer $100 less and see what he says. That's not an insult to the seller, it's just being smart as a buyer.

That 686-1 is a specialized gun... my shooting partner in my old PPC days had one that was outstanding pretty much right out of the box. If you have the need for a heavy barrel and want it, that's about a high normal price around here; not great, but not out of line. It might even be a good investment, but without box and docs it's not a top drawer investment. JMHO, YMMV!

Thanks for the replies. I already have a prelock 686 4" and I don't have a need for the 6". But not having a "need" for a firearm never stopped me before. The OTD price would be around $720. Maybe I will pass considering I just bought a 640 Pro Series yesterday.

That's a fair price. I don't you'll find a better price. If you want one, you should lift it.

In May of 2002 I was on my way to pick up a boat I had bought. Stopped at a gunshow on the way. There was a 586 silhouette laying on a table for $285. I left it laying. ...Still haven't forgiven myself.

About 2001 I was in a gun show in Houston. A man was walking around with a 4" nickel 586 that looked as if it had just been taken from the original box. He wanted $300, and I walked away.

Every now and again I remember that, go to the bathroom and throw up, and feel better. For a few days...
