Hello, I have an offer to trade my Ruger GP100 357 magnum for a S&W Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman. What would you do in this situation? I value my Ruger at about $500 or so. What's the value of the S&W?

It all depends on what part of the country you live in. That 28 looks to be in good shape but the 6" barrel is not as desirable as the 4" version. There is a 28-2 6" with a Bianchi shoulder holster in a local paper that looks about in the same shape as the one you pictured for $450 in my corner of the world. I just bought a 4" with rubber grips for $450 that is not in as good of shape cosmetically as the one you pictured.

I think the wesson is worth a little more than the ruger and 1/2 again cooler.

I have a 6" 28-2 (1974)....It's a bunch of fun to shoot and is a beast. Ruger; nice gun, built like a brick **** house but, only a fair investment. 28-2; a great gun, also well built and should appreciate faster as an investment. But mostly, and as astutely stated by beagleye....wayyyyy cooler!

FYI, I was under $500 out-the-door with original box and a couple boxes of ammo. I think it is an even-up trade if your Ruger is in the 500 buck range. Do it and don't look back!

Ruger still makes the GP100 just as good as ever.

S&W doesn't make the M28 at all anymore.

I love my GP100 and M28/M28-2 but would still make that trade. And then go buy a fresh new GP100.

Call me impartial to S&W's but, I think I would make that trade. Not to take any thing away from the Ruger, I have many a SAA myself but, remember, a Model 28 is a Model 27 without the pretty polished blue finish. Best of both worlds, just buy the model 28 and keep them both in your collection.

I chose to do the same thing. My Ruger was very accurate and in top shape . But I am on the S&Ws now. A good sale for mine came and a good 28-2 came at about the same time . I am pleased . Got to get lucky sometimes .

I prefer the Stainless, or even better the nickel revolvers. And my 28 is of course blued. But I can always change that if I wanted to . ;)

Your 4" stainless GP100 looks like a very desirable gun to own and I
wonder why you feel compelled to get rid of it? I think you will regret
letting it go at some point in the future. As much as I like the md 28
I much prefer the 4" length for handiness. Unless money is a real issue
for you I would suggest you keep the GP100 and look for a 4" md 28.
Sooner or later a decent deal will show up.

like Perrazi said this is a no brainer , anytime you can trade a current production gun for a collectible Smith in great shape, you would be crazy not to!

What A10 said there ^^^^ is quite true .

I have been an active S&W buyer as I sold my Colts at a very good time and for excellent prices. My focus was more on the nickel S&W revolvers, so I passed on some 28s before I recently got one.

I just saw a very good and As NIB 28 that the asking price was $1200 . That is a substantial increase over about a year ago . Granted this one is in the best condition and demands a premium , but that is still a big jump.

I wasnt planning on selling any anyway. Of course I wasnt planning on selling my Colts either ;) . But I got going with a S&W 29, then a 17 , and the S&W bug just set in .

Now I am selling Rugers . I am enjoying the S&Ws as you can tell. I am going to let the new 28 do some work next week as a matter of fact. :)

Heck. I'm in the middle of trading a blued steel near brand new GP100 for a M19-5 right now. Once again, they still make one but not the other.

So where are the pics already???

You said "you were offered a trade"......so he wants a 4" .357 is my guess......

do the "trade" even up and run like"______". I hope you don't lose a good friend on the trade...... but it was his idea right....LOL

Well all this S&W 28-2 posts. I just went out today and bought one.
I found 5 in a 50 mile area.
From $400 to $700 for the 4" blued model. I didn't buy but when I told a friend what I was looking for. He sold me his!!! $375!!!! Lot of holster time but not much ammo through it!!!!
I have a K22 18-4 4" .22LR and wanted the Combat Masterpiece in .357, but the prices were over my budget. So I started looking for an alternate when I saw these posts.
Just had to have one!!! Now I have 3 S&W revolvers!!!
Forgot to add.. Gave my Ruger Blackhawk to my grandson-in-law..
