Show your Model 39s!

Here's my 639. Somebody had tried to fit Millet target sights form a 1911 and messed it up, couldn't crimp the front posts. I had a gunsmith weld up the holes and recut dovetails so I could install Novack rear and fiber optic front. Now it's my go to bowling pin gun since it's heavy weight soaks up the hot hand-loads.

What did they replace the 39 with?

My apology. I missed this post.
The 39 was replaced by the 439, then the 459, then 5904, and now the issued duty is Glock 22.

I guess they also got rid of those flap holsters.
Yes sir. About 1977 or so. Went to strong side thumb break.

Lynn and I sat next to each other in school. One day he came in and got his stuff and said "you won't believe this I just promoted all the way" We used to hang out after class at some hotel on the Loop.
I haven't seen Lynn for several years. I think he's still around. Last I heard he wasn't in the best of health but I haven't seen any notices that he's passed. I broke in his son and he to worked for me until I retired. The son retired as a Sgt last year.

You asked about the defference between a 39 and a 39-2. Frame and longer extractor,I'm sure someone could point out some more.

I have a question---did all the model 39-2 come with adjustable sights?? There is a nickel plated one for sale near me at Gander Mt. for $349.00 . .

Wow, had three 39-2s for over 30 years (two shooters and one safe queen). Even sent one to S&W in the '80s to get a new barrel (it came back with a new barrel, no hump and a different slide, used different bushing). This was, of course, before I knew anything about guns in original condition get more money on resale. Oh, well (sigh!).

Great ergonomics, reliable as heck but terrible accuracy. Greased or oiled the aluminum frame wore rapidly. The CZ-75B SA 9mm, Springfield 1911 9mm, Glock 17 and P1 I have are far more accurate! What did I miss?

No problem I didn't look back to this thread after a couple of days. Yes sir that was quite a promotion cpl. to Col. overnight. Did many of the original 39 people miss the flaps. I know st. Louis cops hated the damn things. we had to make right side holster for PPC matches, no flap. I crated a need to carry a snubbie that you could hold under you hat in hand when you went into some of those district dives that just sprang up during the Arch construction. Mohawk Indians, Southern Appalachian young men, and blacks and they didn't like each other. but would they call the cops heck no. You got calls from passer by's shots fired, fights in the streets. bars that finally called to keep the roof on. For a young guy it was exciting. the older guys 40? would say slow down boy if we get there to fast we will have to fight both of them, It's easier to just fight the winner he will be tired. the old days. East St. Louis was a location of it's own. I'm sure you know better than me....Take Care Stay Safe.....Man I'm getting old!

I don't know of anyone who missed the flaps. Some missed the cross draw as it could be a very quick draw particularly when you had your body bladed in that direction. The cross draw also made it easier to draw with the weak hand.

Yup for sure. A sign of experience. A lot better for them to wear themselves out fighting each other than jumping in too soon and having both sides gang up on us.
