Side plate compatibility question?

Should a mid sixties 10-5 side plate fit on the same era gun?


I got one that is dead on on the color, but would not fit correctly on my gun.


Still hand fitted at this point?

Sideplates were hand fitted to each revolver. That is precisely why the sideplate had the "assembly number" stamped on the inside surface, matching the one on the frame and yoke. Replacements have never been a "drop in" fit.

I think they were hand fitted then and might be even now to some extent.

That being said I have seen some that would fit another revolver, maybe not as good as the original, but pretty well. May be a couple of strokes with some stones even.
But I would not expect them to fit normally.

I've scolded it three times but it is uncooperative!


I'd like to see what a blank frame, sideplate etc look like before the grinding, filing and chiseling begin, the fit difference, or lack thereof is remarkable.

As you now know, they are hand fit. You can usually file/stone a plate to fit another frame, but it might be gappy. If you buy a few and pick the best (almost fit) to work from, you can usually come out mostly OK.

Thanks, it is just an issue of blue loss on the plate, I wonder if just having the side plate reblued would save the time and expense of the good fit search.


It's that dark almost black super polished look of the 60s.

The side plates are press fit swagged into the frame opening and then polished flush with the frame exterior before bluing.

I've only had one experience where a side plate fit well into the opening, but it did not match the frame surface and it was just below the frame where you could feel the difference rubbing a finger over it.

As teletech says, you can try different side plates to get real close "good enough" fit.

Blue loss on part of it, and a light logo strike, not scratches or scrapes, just a fade on the grip end.
