Are sideplates for the same model (K-frame) interchangeable? I'd imagine not without some careful fitting, but I just want to be sure.

Like you said, sideplates are custom fitted. Sometimes if you are VERY lucky, you can swap one that's close. I've replaced a couple 1917 N sideplates and with some hammering and filing, along with a refinish, they can be made to look presentable.

If you did manage to get a different one on it would more than likely be a very poor fit and risk damage to the frame.

I have a 44 magnum with a side plate that was buffed out. I tried to find a replacement side plate. I was told by everyone that they were hand fitted and I could not find one to fit. I ended up having the whole gun refinished to match the side plate.

I must have gotten lucky then. I bought a replacement side plate for my model 19 and it fit just fine.

Actually, I don't need a sideplate. I was asked that question by someone else, and I couldn't imagine they would be interchangeable unless you were very lucky or had a large assortment to try.
