Hey guys,

I am just about 98% set on the MOE(or standard if MOE is sold out again) but I just remembered about the Sig 522 and I believe it's around the same price range as this Smith. The first "tactical" rifle I was going to get was the Keltec SU-22 but had trouble finding a reliable & legal magazine for it and that was soon replaced with the M&P 15-22 :D I especially love that the MOE has great value with all those features that I would have had to do with the Kel Tec. Now that I'm looking at $500 something for the MOE, I thought I'd also take a look at the Sig's .22 rifle. I know nothing on it but am about to watch Nutnfancy's take on it but I want to know if any of you have shot it and your own thoughts on it. Pretty positive that I'm going Smith & Wesson but since there's still time, why not throw another rifle in the mix haha.

It really depends on what you're looking for.

If you want an AR platform with identical controls and function, the 15-22 is one of the best choices.

If you just want a target shooting .22 rifle and don't care about it being an AR, or if you have a Sig centerfire and want the same grip, safety throw, etc, the Sig is a solid choice.

I believe iron sights are still an issue for the 522, but they now sell a longer bull barrel in addition to the standard one. You will have to pay more for rails on the Sig.

The 522 is also heavier, with aluminum receivers. Sig's customer service is nowhere near as fast and eager to help as S&W.

Finishing up the review, seems like a very nice gun. Thing that stuck out to me is that it seems to shoot whatever ammo you feed it with no problems, that's great! I've seen it at the shop next to the Smith and it looks so..naked to me, I dig the value of the 15-22 and I do eventually want to get an ar-15 later down the road so I'm still set on it. Is the Sig more accurate?

+1 for rustspot.

If you plan on getting an AR-15 in the future, get a 15-22. Only thing different is cleaning the internals but all functions and switches are the same.

Sig vs S&W

I spent a couple days with a firearms instructor shooting the sig and two 15/22s(his and mine). To be honest, I think the sig feels more solid and better contructed. Accuracy seems on par. He's had no problems with either of his rifles but I can't seem to get through a mag without a FTE or FTF and am about to send it back. If I were to do it over, I would probably buy the sig. But I agree with other commenters about using the 15/22 as a trainer for a full-on AR. If you can get one without problems, I'm sure you'll love it. I personally still haven't gotten past the plasticky feel compared to a real AR.

you probably have an older model that already has known issues, and those issues have already been addressed. send it back to S&W for repair they will fix everything up to spec for you.

m&p 15-22 vs sig

dont know about the sig! but my s&w !5-22 moe model with a # starting with DUU is awesome!!! it is ammo picky, but guess what? it eats the cheapest ammo out there all day long, federal 525's or 550's

I've learned to love plastic!

Have both, and we really like both. I have more detailed comment in the thread Phil referenced. In short:
- Sig 522 metal, has shot everything we've put into it perfect. No Bolt Hold Open:(, I have personal issues with that. More limited on accessories.
- 15-22 - the first fully functional .22 chambered AR15 platform (and I enjoy supporting S&W for that). Our 2nd one has been perfect and fed and fired everything we have put in it. :) Some get hung up on the "it's plastic" thing, I say that the "15-22 and pMags have tought me to love plastic":):).
