SIG rifles

Anyone have a SIG rifle? One of my wife's coworkers was in need of some cash earlier this year and asked my wife if she knew anyone that might be interested in purchasing a rifle her husband had.

After a brief negotiation I brought this SIG 556 home for $750.00. Came with one SIG factory 30rd mag and a little SIGTAC STH-400A red dot sight and factory hard case. I'm thinking it's a fairly early model, maybe 2007 or 2008 but don't know a scource for researching serial numbers. Pretty sure the red dot was a factory offering with this rifle. Twist rate should be 1:7. I've picked up some 62gr FMJ so I can compare with some 55gr and see if it shows a distinct preference.

Based on the info provided by the original owner it was only taken to the range once. From the looks of it I'd say that's most likely true.

I've yet to take it to the range myself. The forward grip is an aftermarket addition but I like the way it feels so will probably leave it on. I believe I did ok for $750.00.

I think you did very well on that one. As a self-confessed SIG fan-boy, I own a SIG 556, SIG 556R (it's in 7.62X39), and a SIG 716 (the .308).

My only slight whine is that the 716 is really heavy. I need a gun-bearer like in the old African hunting movies.

That's a great rifle for a fair price - you did well. Those have pretty dang decent triggers too!

Agreed. I think mine is about 8.5lbs. Not as heavy as the M14 I was issued but a little heavier than your run of the mill AR. Hoping I can get to the range this weekend. Won't be long and it'll be too cold for my liking.

+1, you did very well. I’ve never fired one but have had them in my hands and they felt great. Always feels good to stumble across a deal that you didn’t plan on

People wanted the 551 and Sig gave them your rifle. It is an excellent gun but it was eventually withdrawn from the market because of the Pervasiveness of the AR/M4 platform. In fact Sig started to build them.

That's a really nice one and looks to be one of the earlier models. Some of the older JS serial numbered rifles had a lot of Swiss parts. There is a 556 discussion forum for this rifle. FYI the serial numbered upper is the "rifle", not the lower like the AR15's.

Put some Velcro just behind the ejection port otherwise the ejected cases will very quickly wear of the paint behind the ejection port. I did s soon as I got my JS series 556. Has Swiss internals and barrel. Barrel was finished in the US. Very quickly put a Magpul CTR butt stock and 551 Swiss hand guards on mine. Made for a much easier handling gun. Very reliable but even with FFGH or tailored hand load could not gets 5 shot 100 yard groups lower than 2 moa except for a few groups around 1.5 moa. Early on I use to frequent the SIG 556 board and that was a common complaint.

I read something along those lines, maybe on the Sig forum. Sig was trying to bring the rifle out in their New Hampshire plant and whether they were running into delays or they just wanted to get it into stores they used bolts and other parts made at the Sig factory in Europe.

There were comments that these early rifles weren't compliant because of those parts. Some folks seem to think those parts are better, others not so much.
