I just bought this Outdoorsman, primarily because of the nice ivories. The combination of Marbles brass bead front and U-notch rear also intrigued me. Are they aftermarket or was the combination available from the factory on special order? There are no markings to indicate return for service. If possibly original, I will request a letter when they are again being accepted.

Check this link starting with Post #19. That front sight was available via special order or could have been changed out post-factory. A factory letter will give you the answer.

K22 Outdoorsman 1st Series

Curious what the serial number is? 1st or 2nd Model? Those ivories would not likely have been available from the factory, so post-factory addition.

As with pretty much any S&W target sighted gun of the time, there was the standard front (a Patridge w/gold and then silver Call bead in your case), from 1923 to 1942) and then your choice from an assortment of others. I have the assortment for seemingly everything except the K-22 1st here, but if yours is a Marble (so stamped on one side---and Sheard, or Sheard Pat., or #35, or nothing on the other side), you're good to go. As to whether it'll show up on the letter, I don't know. Extra cost options are virtually guaranteed to letter; freebie options seem to letter or not depending on what you had for breakfast. It wouldn't hurt to note you have it, are pretty sure it was a no extra cost option, and ask if the records show it was ordered.

And up there where I said the Patridge w/gold and silver Call bead was standard from 1923 to 1942, let's re-do that one. The Plain Patridge was the standard front on S&W targets from 1923 to 1942-------not counting the K-22 1st. It had the first gold then silver Call beads on a Patridge.

Thanks everybody for the info. I love this place. Definitely worth a letter and I will report when I get it. I love the ivories and bought the gun knowing they were not factory. The serial number is 639688; the rear sight does not have the second screw.
