I need to change the sight on an M&P 45c, 40, 9mm 2.0, & a Shield 9mm. I’m looking for recommendations on which sight pusher(s) work best. Wheeler? MGW? Also don’t want spend 4,5, or $600.

A really excellent sight pusher is very expensive and not really for the 'once in a blue moon' hobbyist. I bought a NcStar Vism for $39. It does the job very good. You can find them on Ebay, MidwayUSA, etc.

I have MGW (M&P specific for both standard and Shield 9/40), NCStar, and Wheeler, not to mention a few of the 3rd party offerings out there. NCStar is a very sturdy pusher for the price. The Wheeler is more expensive, but in my experience overall better than the NCStar. Not saying the NCStar pusher is a slouch if all you have to spend is ~$50. I'd take the NCStar over most of the 3rd party offerings out there, no offense to those selling them. You can typically find the Wheeler for ~$150-175, which is still less expensive than some of the more expensive universal pushers out there.

The Vism looks to be a bargain for the $. However, some reviews say parts break easily. Could be operator error, poor lubrication, poor setup. I can't tell whether or not the pushing "blade" actually contacts the base of the sight. It appears to contact higher up on the sight, which I feel is undesirable. I'd like to hear from someone re: these blades...Most other pushers have interchangeable blades/blocks with differing shape fingers to fit between the dovetail(s).

I have not handled or used this one, but it appears to be pretty well made. And, no, the $300 pushers are not necessary.

Anyone have/used one, and are my observations correct??

if you can find an mgw, they are fantastic....pricey? yeah....cards on the table, they are not cheap.

when you compare them to the cheap aluminum **** you're getting off of ebay, you'll see why my 39 dollar ebay wonder was recycled almost immediately.

my mgw was used, and cost 125 off of ebay….if you can find one, well worth the money

a quick scan shows there is currently on for sale on ebay for a rather decent number (shipping price stinks, but, I gotta nag about something)

For a low cost alternative the NCStar did the job on my 9mm 2.0 shield. It was tight, but it worked. I got mine from Ebay from Arkansasquartermaster who shipped it the same day. I just checked it and it's even less than I paid, $39. The gunsmith was going to charge me $40 to remove my sight.

I used a relatively cheap Fisher sight pusher from Amazon to put night sights on my 45 shield and 2.0 compact. It did the job, but it was an ordeal, and I don't think I'll be using it again. Each push required a seemingly endless amount of shimming and clamping to get everything squared up and positioned properly without damaging the slide or sights. If I have to do it again, I'll bite the bullet, and spend the money for something better.

Shameless plug: sightpushertool.com
I’d recommend the Mk lll with both sets of pin adapters.

I recommend The sight tool from sightpushertool.com.I have one of the earlier models and it has been an excellent tool for several sight applications that I have needed.

Thanks for the kind words. The older models worked well, and the updated models work even better. Not cheap by any means, but not nearly $400 like the MGW Universal model.

Figure out what you will need it for up front. I bought a cheaper Ebay (maybe, don't remember now) one for like $60 a few years back to take off the sight so I could replace the striker block, but then 2yrs later, that particular one wasn't going to work on the front sight when I added a Dawson night sight. Had to pay a gunsmith $15 to get that put on. Would have done it different up front if I'd have known I was going to end up removing/replacing both.

I use a brass punch and hammer if that's an option you're considering? You need a vice too of course

Don’t forget a sturdy work bench to mount the vise on. The cost of a good bench vise and a sufficiently sturdy bench to mount it on usually far exceeds the cost of a sight pusher. Then you still have to buy some brass punches and a hammer. :D

I'm aware that this is an old thread, but I had the need to take off and replace the rear sight of my M&P 9Pro so I could replace the striker block with an Apex Ultimate Striker Block and spring. The Wheeler pistol sight pusher was/is on sale for $113 at Brownell's. I have 2 other sight pushers (sub-$75) that wouldn't budge it. Bought the Wheeler, followed the set-up directions, which are complicated but clear, and got the sight off and back on without issues.

However. let me tell you, that sucker was on TIGHT. After removing the set screw, I set it up in the Wheeler and began the removal per the instructions. They said, don't apply excessive force, but I was sure something was going to break....then "CRACK"--a loud popping sound, and it began to move. Nothing broke, all was well and it was easier (but not easy) putting it back after changing the striker block.

Wow-- a great tool, built like a tank, but the M&P rear sights (at least mine) gave it and me a run for our money.
