Sigma 40, Model # SW40C
Purchased used about 12 years ago. 2-10 round mags & 2-15 round mags. The pistol originally had reliability issues, then I replaced the magazine spring in all 4 mags. Reliability issue seemed to go away. Then the plastic guide rod broke and S&W sent a free replacement, which includes the spring. Then, firing factory ammo, I began to have Failure to Feed (FTF) issues. About 1 per magazine, not the last round. The FTF issues certainly seem linked to the new recoil spring assembly.
Any suggestions for remedy?
Thanks

Galloway Precision makes a stainless steel guide rod for the Sigma pistols. I think it is $30 and you can choose the strength of the spring and whether you want the guide rod to have a stainless or black oxide finish. I put one in mine with the normal 17 lb spring like the one from the factory and it is working great so far.

Replacing the recoil rod & spring is a good (and relatively cheap) response that may solve the problem. It is somewhat unusual to hear of a recoil spring rod, even a plastic one, breaking -- it implies some unusual force during the recoil or the return movement of the slide.

A new Galloway metal rod with the standard spring should work fine, along with some lube and a reasonable break-in period (100 rounds?). If that doesn't work, you can try the old standard of calling S&W Customer Service and sending it back (send it back with the factory plastic recoil rod/spring, not the aftermarket Galloway rod/spring).

P.S. -- I've got the Galloway rod/spring and my SD-9 functions flawlessly.
