I asked this question on another board and while I value all opinions I'm thinking this is where it belongs.

I have a S&W 659 that I bought new sometime in the mid eighties. When I bought it I maybe put 30 rounds through and recently shot another 50 so it's shot less than 100 rounds altogether. I recently obtained a CCW permit. I will never carry on a regular basis but I make frequent trips to the coast, mostly at night. The ability to legally carry when driving at night, stopping at rest areas for a break or nap has been much less nerve racking with my security blanket. I only need one pistol and have thought about getting a Sigma to replace the 659. I chose the Sigma because I don't have the money for one of the more expensive autos and it's a S&W. The weight of the 659 doesn't bother me and it fits in an inside the pants waistband holster fine. My only worry is that it being a 2nd generation Smith will I be able to get it parts or fixed if needed. After this long-winded explanation my question to those on this form with way more experience is, if weight and concealability aren't a factor which of these two autos would you consider more durable and dependable. Thanks for any replies.

Keep the 659, it's a classic. Still not that hard to find parts for. Built like a tank. It will handle anything you feed it. A little bulky and heavy to some people but I never had any concerns.

If I read your post correctly, the gun has not even had 100 rounds through it. Unless you plan on dramatically increasing your shooting time with it, future repair issues should be a non-factor. If you just mainly carry it for your current purposes, your 659 should serve your needs adequately for a very long time. Personally, I would feel better keeping a gun that I already have confidence in rather than taking a chance on something new. Best of luck whichever way you decide to go.

That 659 should last a very, very long time. I would keep the 659, no question. Nothing against the Sigma, but if you want a plastic gun for carry there are better options out there.

Keep your 659! It is a great CC gun and will serve you well and loyally.

Ditto.
Unless you have someone eager to buy your 659, you'll take a soaking on a trade-in, for a gun that is no better for carry.

I carry and have carried sigmas's for many years, and are my first choice. That being said, if I had a 659, ammo, holster, I would shoot it, carry it and enjoy it. Why take the loss for a "used gun" om an unknown gun. Be Safe.

I have owned a sigma and currently own a really nice 659. Kinda apples to oranges, with the exception of the caliber being the same. The sigma trigger needs practice and some modding to make it nice. It does have the advantage of being lighter. The 659 is much heavier but will hold up better in the end. At less than 100 rounds, you have no worries about breakage. If you haven't shot a sigma, put one in your hand and shoot it. That is the only way you can decide. IMHO, the 659 would get the nod if I were in your shoes.

659 or Sigma

Illinois State Police ran 59 series S&Ws for 20+ years.

Pretty good track record.

Doesn't the Sigma have plastic sights?

Steel sights will stand a little abuse better.

Good Luck

Without hesitation - 659. It is built rock-solid and very reliable. If it doesn't have 100 rounds through the pipe it's virtually a new gun and at the rate your shooting it you'll wear out before it does. You have a nice 2nd. Gen. firearm - but if your going to carry - practice with it. I don't carry any firearm unless I've put 200 to 300 rounds through it to get familar with it and comfortable-just sayin'. Good Luck.

Based on the replies I'm keeping the 659. Maybe sometime down the road I'll get a Sigma to keep it company. Thanks for the informed advice.

I've had both and the Sigma is not even in the same league as the 659. It's more like a Taurus than S&W.

The Sigma's trigger is terrible out of the box but can be easily fixed. After taking my Sigma's trigger apart to lighten it I have to say the parts are quite fragile looking so it does not inspire confidence in me for a carry gun that must work 100% when you need it most. Needless to say I did not keep it very long.

I now have a 6906 and a 457 two tone. These are great guns which I trust my life to 100%.

BREAKING NEWS!!!

The 659 aint gonna break.

You can buy some spare springs, firing pins, and extractors if it makes you feel better. Feel free to misplace them though, 'cause its not likely you'll be needing them.

Clean up your firing pin channel every now and again.

One of my students recently took Basic Pistol with his Sigma.

At just 5 yards, he could not shoot accurately with it. The trigger was awful. I had difficulty controlling it.

He passed with flying colors when I let him use my Springfield XD.

I would rely on my 659...

I have never owned a Sigma nor have I ever shot one but as far as I am concerned I would always choose a metal gun over a plastic one. Just old fashion maybe but that is what I like and the 659 is one of the best.
I don't know why but they don't seem to be as popular as other metal guns . Maybe the weight has something to do with it.
