What's up guys and gals, I have recently bought 5 acres and I'm building a berm to shoot in to. The only thing I am worried about now is the neighbors complaining about noise.

So what are the steps and approximate cost of getting a silencer for my 15-22? Also what brand silencers do you recommend?

Or maybe it's called a suppressor? I'm not an expert on these things lol

Thanks!

You need to check your state laws. Some states outlaw them. A local gun shop may be a good starting point. Another consideration is what is behind your berm that may be hit by high rounds.

I'll start there, the only thing behind my berm is woods and about a mile before there are any houses or buildings. Surely it would hit a tree prior to making it a mile. I only plan on shooting .22 and shotgun on this range

$350 will buy you a decent can, though you can spend more or less depending on what you are looking for. Plus $200 Tax stamp and whatever your Class 3 dealer charges for transfer.

Silencerco Sparrow is very popular.

It's unlikely that a local shop will have a good selection. Take a look at SilencerShop online. They have good prices and are excellent to do business with.

You'll get lots of advice... happy hunting.

Basic Considerations

*User Serviceable
*Ease of cleaning (disassembly when dirty)
*Materials used

ChattanoogaPhil covered the main points. A few options include, Liberty ( Kodiak +Kodiak TL), Silencerco ( Sparrow). They perform better (quieter ) with subsonic ammo which if available is more expensive. Innovative Arms makes an integral suppressor for the 15-22 that works extremely well with high velocity ammo. It is QUIET!!, you only hear the clicking of the action, just like in there video. I am always skeptical about about sound on a video, but when I got it, running Fed 36 gr HV 550 bulk, it was the same as video, only action noise. They shorten the barrel, and permanently attach the suppressor, so it is NOT and SBR and you only require one tax stamp and you can disassemble for cleaning easily, which can be a problem with some other integral suppressors. They are legal in TN, call them for a price because it is less than the MSRP. PM me if you have other questions. Also silencer shop in TX usually has the best prices, availability and they are very helpful. Be Safe,

Click on search, click on the first advanced search, type "suppressor" in the keyword field (without quotes), tell it to search titles only, select the 15-22 forum at the bottom, then click search now. That will keep you occupied for a long while & answer all your questions.

I built a berm & target range for my suppressed 22s. I have 2 Buck Marks, the 15-22 & a CZ 455 & all have threaded barrels so all can be shot on my home range without bothering the neighbors or my horses.

This might interest you.

This one also. Now, all I use is the dip.

I got my 22Sparrow locally (Oxford, MS). Best purchase I have ever made.

Assuming your state allows. First you buy one from a class 3 dealer. It stays there and they do the paperwork. The you must have chief of police/sheriff signature. $200 and wait anywhere from 6 months to a year. Once your paperwork comes back you go and pick up the suppressor. That paperwork must ALWAYS be with the suppressor. If you go somewhere bring the paperwork along. I would even recommend bringing it with you to your backyard.

DO NOT skim on the paperwork. Full name means full name. If your name is Michael write Michael not Mike. If for some reason you print out the paperwork online it will come as 2 pages one sided. Their rules state one page double sided. ....do that.

You'll also need some photo's and fingerprints

Something I forgot to mention is considering a Trust. There are some advantages in using a Trust instead of individual. Its also my understanding that Trusts can now be e-filed which can significantly reduce the approval time. Not all Class 3 dealers e-file so that something else to check out. A Trust may not be for you but it's something folks should at least be aware of. I've never done it so maybe someone here can provide more detail.

How can you take a picture of a trust? How can a trust have finger prints? How can a trust have a name? Please enlighten me. BTW Do Not do business with C-3 Defense. Their can exploded after 35 rounds. Sent it back and they replaced it with what looked like a much better one that only lasted 25 rounds. Got it returned not repaired. Having it fixed now but it did do a good job of suppression.

Google atf, go to suppressors, go to trusts- it will explain all the paper work, no photos or prints with trust. I have always had very good luck with any of their products. Be safe,

My business is a privately held corporation, with just family members as stockholders. I bought my suppressor thru the corp & did not need fingerprints or any law enforcement to sign off.

How do you plan on silencing the shotgun?

2 liter bottle duct taped to end of barrel.... Just kidding. I'll only shoot it when my neighbors are away or something. Heck I may even invite them to shoot so they won't care.

Like in the movie "Shooter":

Standing up.

In a boat. ...

Good luck seeing over that bottle! ;)

Our shop just got a suppressor in for a customer. Sorta...

The customer bought it and we ordered it from the distributer in December and they submitted paperwork to the ATF in order to send it to us. We got it in this week.

Time Elapsed: 4 months.

We called the customer to come in and get the serial number, etc., so he could submit to the ATF to have it turned over to him.

Estimated Time: They don't say but probably another 4 to 6 months.

Heart felt sympathy to you guys for moderators.

Over her in the UK it's hard as hell to get permit for a rifle but the addition of moderators is very simple and actually encouraged. Cost only as much as the "Can" about 40-60 USD for a fairly good one. More if you have it. :)

Maybe I will not moan so much at some costs for additions to system. That is a HARSH system you guys have on that score. :(

Here in the US these things are considered evil, by many gun owners too. Let there be no doubt, Americans are easily brainwashed into anti-gun thinking. Over the years even the NRA has been no friend to suppressors.... though they seem to be warming up to the idea as suppressors become more popular.

I can walk into a gun store and walk out 10 minutes later with a gun. But it takes me a year to acquire a muffler for it.

Are you only supposed to shoot subsonic rounds through a suppressor? With the .22 being so hard to find wouldn't it be unwise to use a suppressor?
