Silicone Gun and Reel Cloths

I know most of us have used those silicone gun and reel cloths at some time or another. They are usually made by Birchwood-Casey or Hoppe's. While I usually buy them locally, I noticed MidwayUSA lists them as discontinued. I emailed both companies asking if they quit making them, but have yet to receive a reply. Do y'all think Midway could be mistaken, or would these popular gun cleaning items actually be discontinued?

Can't say if they're discontinued but you could make up some with suitable flannel or a retired kitchen dish towel and a cheap can of silicone spray from Lowe's. For my own use, I don't trust them...preferring instead to keep a towel on my bench well sprayed with Brake Free or a squirt of military grade weapons oil...finger prints etc. dontchaknow. I've used them since I was a kid, and that's been quite awhile. I still have them around, at home, camp, office etc. But I was at Cabela's and at a Sportsman's Warehouse last weekend with a friend, and he was looking to buy a new one, and could not find one on the display, even though they had fully stocked racks of other products from Hoppe's and BC. Never thought of them being discontinued, though, can't imagine why they would be. always seemed like good sellers.

I like them a lot and have used them for many years. That said, nowadays living in a humid climate , I stick a desiccant pack or two in the soft case with the pistol when I use them (I think most of the soft cases use open cell foam which retains moisture anyway).

Cannot remember when I first used them, but it was many decades ago.

I have a few, one goes in my long gun carry case, a couple are in the gun safe. one in the pistol range box and a couple more are on my gun bench.

My wife and kids picked that habit up from me and they have a bunch close by!

I just buy a can of spray silicone and spray a shop cloth , use it on whatever , store the treated cloth in a zip lock freezer bag . Add a spray of silicone when it needs more.... simple to make .

I will say I have not found silicon to be a great rust preventative , good for wiping off finger prints and such...but for long term rust protection...there are better products.

It may just mean Midway has discontinued selling them. If everyone is making their own they may not be selling well.
I like Rustys Rags which if I remember correctly is a piece of sheeps skin with silicone added. In fact when I bought mine they even included a little bottle of extra silicone. The idea that the fur may get down into areas that a cloth may not makes since. Its usually the last step when I finish cleaning a gun.

A lot of people use silicone cloths WAY too long.
When they'e used for a while they pick up grit and get dirty. That can scratch a guns finish.

So, I go to any fabric store or many Walmart's and buy a yard of white cotton flannel.
I cut a cloth, take it outside and liberally spray it with auto store silicone.
Let dry and store in a baggy.

When it starts getting dirty, throw it away and make a new one.
You can also cut your own gun cleaning patches from cotton flannel.

One warning...... Don't use environmentally friendly silicone spray. The propellant contains water and when stored in the bag the cloth will mildew horribly.

I use Kellogg's professional products( out of Sandusky, Ohio ) pure silicone # 110 or #105 in 10 oz. cans. If you find it in a hardware store in a 4 oz can that says pure silicone, it is #110. I checked with factory.

Next, get about a 6 to 8" square piece of REAL lambswool ( 1/2 in pile), spray it, and fold in half and work it in by rubbing halves together. Then wipe gun down. Why lambswool?? The fibers get into everything, even screw slots. Retreat lambswool as needed.

Been using same product and method for 50 years. Zero rust

Get yourself a few yards of 100% Cotton Flannel at the fabric store. Cut them up into 16" x 16" (or what ever size you like) and charge them with Silicone from a Spray can. Recharge when it dries out as you would a store bought one.

You can use your favorite Gun Oil as well. I use Rig #2 and have in the past used Remoil. They all work great. I'd recommend getting white fabric so you can judge when its dirty and needs to be tossed.

Sentry Marine Tuf Cloth is the best I have used for corrosion preventative. Much Better than silicone rag in my experience.
