Silicone gun cases

I just ordered several of Midway's silicone impregnated gun cases for some longterm storage. Does the silicone in this style of case have any impace on wooden grips? Should grips be removed before storage?

I’m not sure that there is enough silicone impregnated in those cases to cause harm but then I don’t have one of those cases so I can’t make a judgment.

I do know this from years of woodworking. On fine wood it is advisable to avoid silicone because it seeps into the fibers and prevents the wood from breathing. If it penetrates deep into the pores of the wood it can become impossible to remove.

If the silicone is on the wood surfaces its not difficult to remove. Rub in the direction of the grain with a cloth dampened with turpentine and powder laundry detergent.

FYI: Many wood cleaning products contain silicone, wax and alcohol. Read the label before applying to fine woods.

I have a couple of shotguns I used for ducking hunting back in the 70's as well as a Marlin lever action and a pre 64 Winchester Featherweight. They have been wrapped in Bore Stores for more years than I care to count without problems. I just pulled the 70 out and the gun, scope, leather sling and wood seem as good as ever. I know that silicone is good for metal as well as rubber (I spray it on rubber molding to help prevent icing in the winter) so I can't image it will harm wood.
